This is not a lawn mower question but thought you guys might be able to help. I have a wood splitter with a briggs and Stratton engine. I was having trouble getting it started. I could get it to turn over once if I sprayed some starting fluid in the spark plug hole. figured I had a problem with my carburetor so since I bought this used I just replaced the whole carb. finally got the engine started and it sounded like it had a high whine to it. turned it off and noticed smoke coming out of the engine where the pull string is. Does anybody have any idea what is going on or what I need to fix.

Thanks

Sounds like the starter clutch is sticking. Take your engine model, type and code numbers to a good repair shop and they should have a replacement clutch and can explain to you how the replace it. I’m guessing it is part number 399671 and costs about $25.
