it seems you hit all the bases, the problem with a single carb on a twin cylinder is one side will always run richer. a little flame and dull orange muffler glow after dark is normal. there may be nothing wrong. bertmobile 1 had you check everything I could think of.

Weeell I found something....

This engine is mounted 90 degrees from normal. It struck me the other day that the exhaust from the other cylinder was a lot longer than the side I have been messing with.

I removed the exhaust pipe and started it again. Now I have fire shooting from both cylinders.

Would this be a rich condition from the carburetor?
