My neighbor has a John Deere Lawn Mower LA115 and the plastic fan blades on the top o the engine are broken. I have ordered new parts, but she want to mow before the repairs are done. Will this damage the engine? Would riding without the cowling help keep the engine cooler?
Thanks for any help.

No, do not remove the cowling. It directs the air over the engine. Also should not operate with broken fan blades really. If they are already breaking there will be reduced air flow and they have a habit of breaking loose and taking out wiring.

the engine is cooled by air flowing over it driven by the fan.
No fan = no air

No air over the engine is the same as driving your car with no water in the radiator an we all know how that one ends.
