poulan riding mower belts

I bought this mower back to life from the junk pile . its running sweet now after a new head gasket valve and lap job. the major part of the problem was these are not the right size belts for the Poulan. when running the blades still spin on the no matter what the engament leaver is on.the transmission belt just pops off.DSCN1410.jpgDSCN1409.jpgDSCN1408.jpg

OK, what are you trying to tell us
1) you have replaced the old belts with new ones according to tag numbers and they are giving you grief ?
2) the recommended belt numbers are wrong ?

144200 = A88 7/8"
140294 = A82 3/4"

As pulleys get older they wear so some times you need to go down a belt size or two to compensate for wear.
Blades should have a brake to stop them spinning.
If you have gone cheap and used a standard fan belt they are designed NOT TO SLIP so won't dissengage when you turn the blades off.

Other than that double check the belt routings and the condition of the pulleys and the tensioning springs.
The drive belt should have keepers everywhere to stop the belt falling off.
make sure you have replaced them and done so in the correct position.

Yes ..sorry. yes what I need to know the belt size .

140294 belt.
Is the belt for the transmission the 140294 belt?
because that is the size I got(its brown in color) from Amazon. It is too short to fit.
I hate to take the deck off again but I will to take some pictures.
I would like to thank everyone for there help :)

Back in college I had a professor who always used refferences from the reserve stack section of the library.
His reason for this was those books could not leave the floor that they were on and there was no photocopier, so we had to READ the material then make notes.

What brought this back to mind was your first photo.
Tractor Drive belt is just that it goes to the rear to drive the mower
And Blade Drive Belt well it moves the blades.
There should also be a decal on the deck or under the foot board to show you how the deck belt is routed.

Take the belts off and spin all the pulleys, if they make noise, replace them now before they fail and wreck your nice new expensive belts.

The mower runs so sweet now. the transmission works well also. I had to put the old belt on for the trans to work.
Now the bad.The blads do not spin at all. I rebuilt the deck. one issue is the break pad in the first picture is always stuck on. 2nd is again the belt,Its just too lose.I will try to get the new belt tomorrow. Getting real tired of taken on and off the deck..
any pointers are greatly appricated. thank you in advance

The old drive belt is totally stuffed so you are playing with yourself by putting it back on.
When the burned section gets to a pulley with the transmission under load it will just sit there and burn while you go nowhere.
Also the V idler looks worn beyond use as well.
Mower belts do not stretch very much 1/2" tops so measure the new belt against the old one to see if you have the right belt.
The number is nice, but unless we know the brand of belt no one can double check that it is the correct belt and from your photos it looks way too small.

There is an adjustment on the deck to back the belt brake off.
If the engagement does not pull the belt tensioner enough to release the brake.
