I used to think the same thing, and indeed it may be true in some cases, but I have always worn comfortable shoes with plenty of toe space and I had to have surgery on my right big toe when I got older and I should have had the same thing done to my left big toe! I waited too long and now all they could do is remove the second toe on my left foot! (Screw that!)
So being a woman and stuffing your feet into ridiculously pointy shoes, is not the only way someone can end up with hammer toes! Just getting old and walking around seems to be a cause as well!
