My Honda gas mower string line has developed a thin frayed spot about one foot away from the holding loop upon which the handle rests.

1. Why is the string wearing in that one small spot ?

2. It might still be within the seven year extended warranty period. Is this repair/replacement covered?

3. Could I replace the string myself if/when the string breaks?

Thanks.

No need to replace the entire starter, as the rope can be replaced very easily. U-tube has some good videos which will show you how to do it.

Starter cord is not string as you know it ( Jim ) .
It is a lot of long strait fibers for strength encases in a platted outer cover for abrasion resistance.
There is a massive difference in the quality of the strings available so either buy a genuine Honda one ( expensive ) or the Stens premium ( black ) one.
In $ per inch costing, precut lengths are poor value but the smallest spool will just rot on your shelf before you use it.
I think the Honda part comes with a new handle
Avoid evilaby and Amazon unless it comes in a sealed factory packet.
There is a lot of fake rope out there which is a waste of time fitting which is most likely why Mark suggested buying the whole unit.

And to answer your original question. the cord goes thin in a spot because some of the inner fibres have broken at that spot abd the outer cover is taking weight so stetching thin as it is platted.

Seven years old not covered under warranty. Over time parts do wear out. Yes you can replace recoil starter yourself. Suggestion, order recoil starter & not just the rope. These folks have good prices & ship fast to your door.

It's almost seven years old and IS covered by a warranty, thanks to Honda + Home Depot. I know parts wear out, but this is an isolated spot. Wonder if the warranty will be voided if I attempt repairs.

Thank you. These are reasonably priced. Should all of these be ordered?

Warranttee will be voided if you touch a spannar to the mower.
Blades belts & starter cords are usually exempt from warranttee replacement

Your warranty with American Honda (USA) will NOT be voided if you do your own service/repairs to your Honda mower.

If, however, your service work causes some other problem or failure, that would not be covered under warranty. Example #1: You fix the recoil starter, and left wheel falls off. They are obviously not related, so a defective left wheel would be replaced under warranty. Example #2: You fix the recoil starter, and now the engine makes a scraping noise. Seem a nut off the starter fell off during your repair and got jammed under the flywheel. Fixing that problem would NOT be covered under warranty, as it was directly due to the something you did to the mower.

The Honda warranty covers factory defective parts only. Certain parts are defined as consumable parts and when they wear, they are not considered defective. These include blades, air filter element, and recoil starter rope as examples. Each warranty job is a case-by-case deal; if your mower is only a month old and the starter rope breaks, it would probably be repaired under warranty. But, if you mower is 4-5 years old, and the starter rope is becoming frayed or weak, it will probably NOT be covered under warranty. You can read the full warranty document, including the full list of consumable parts here:

Honda Power Equipment Warranty

Recoil rope replacement is a simple repair; here's the procedure from the shop manual:

Finally, a brand new, entire recoil assembly, with new rope and grip, is only about $12.

Robert, you are plain awesome. Where are the directions for removing the old parts?

Also, this, if your model has the stand-off/circle for the starter grip, be sure the recoil isn't neatly tucked under the support tab:
