Motor wont start, but back fires out the exhaust

I bought a wood chipper with a 5hp B&S motor and when I pull the pull starter it back fires a flame out the exhaust and wont start.

What causes this? I googled some things but didn't find any real good answers.

It sounds like a valve problem. The very first thing is check your valve adjustment.
