My lawn is basically thick sod with clay/soil, then pure clay and rock. Dethatching and aerating serve no point and ruin my lawn, I am lucky to have a giant 80 gallon roller made to be only 3 feet wide in order to put maximum pressure to take the bumps, snowplow errors and ground moles and such at bay for a little while until it rains then I roll it again after the ground saturates. From experience working with others, I would aerate first, as the drums flattens the grass somewhat, dethatch, then add lime, wait for rain or a few days to get pH balance in the soil. Then fertilize with a balanced fertilizer aka 20N/20P/20K, wait a day or for a rain and then add the grass seed. cover the seed with dirt, cut grass, hay or whatever to keep it from blowing away or having the rain move it.
Now you can enjoy your lawn and have something to mow into a masterpiece.
Enjoy!
