So the here's the latest on the restoration progress...was able to get the piston unstuck from the cylinder sleeve after much aggravation. Upon removal, the piston was in decent shape. I buffed the piston with 320 grit sandpaper to remove the corrosion where it must have been sticking to the walls of the cylinder. I lightly honed the cylinder and reassembled the block. My carburetor kit arrived yesterday and the carburetor was reassembled. Today I cleaned up the plate where the coil and condenser is housed. (I believe I have seen it referred to as the magneto) My new coil is supposed to arrive next week and I will be able to put everything back together.

My biggest concern is related to the amount of compression the engine will have after honing the cylinder and buffing the piston. (it appears to have some compression, but I did not assess with definitive measurement) The part number for piston rings on the C-12 is 601006 and I have been unable to locate this part. Ebay has several other rings for older mowers including OMC labeled parts. Does anyone know if any of these other piston rings will work on the C-12? I have found 679252, 678424, 681737, and 678423.

Below is a pic of the homemade system used to pull out the piston. Not sure why it was so hard to remove.

Thanks
Sean

Tulsa Engine Warehouse has ring sets for "D" and "F" engines for very modest cost.

What did you use to hone the cylinder? I've used brake cylinder hones with some success on small 2 stroke engines (Tanaka 50cc).
