Engine speed for a 27 hp Generac

We have an old '89 Dixie that we bought a repower engine for a couple of summers ago. I THINK the engine is running too slow. I FINALLY bought a new tach and it runs about 1890 rpms without the blades engaged. I thought my old engine ran about 2100 rpm. Where can I find the proper speed for this engine? I think I heard that some of these Generacs were set up to power generators and were set at 1800 rpm. Can anyone tell me where to get the info? Also, IF it is running slow, how do I speed it up? Thanks, Bob

Most engines should run between 3200-3600, they usually adjust it for blade tip speed-safety, I would contact Dixie Chopper for that model, but no, I probably wouldn't. It has been some years since I have fiddled with a generac, can you give some model -spec numbers or a pic?

Knowing Dixie, they probably set it at 3600....

We try to set engine RPM on the 27 and 33 Generacs to 3500-3700 rpm at my shop. 1800 is nearly idle speed, so I suspect your tach is a bit off as well.

Thanks for the replie. My new tach has settings for several engines. Evidently mine is running at about 3600 RPM after I got it set on the right engine mode. With sharpened blades it cuts a LOT better! ;-)

After thinking about it more, Dixie probably recommends 4000 rpms.... But I don't.....

Thanks. I guess it was running fine, engine wise, I just THOUGHT it should run a little faster. That's what I get for thinking! ;-)

What does the engine drop to when the blades are engaged?

I have a 2006 27hp Generac 50" cut and it runs best per the tach 2800 - 3200.
