If you pulled the head cap off you will have to have a new gasket the old one will never re-seal properly.

Could be a reason is was overheating then? Yes it blew out a bunch of smoke when it started then not much after a few minutes of running.

Yep replace it with a new one, and let us know how it turns out. I repaired a John deere rider that was doing the same thing, and it was a bad head cap gasket.
