Riding mower hard to shift

Craftsmen riding mower 42 inch, is hard to shift, 6 speed manual transamission won't go in reverse most of the time.

You don't say how old the unit is or the model number. Three things may be causing the problem. 1. The brake is not tight enough to stop the tranie so you can shift. Needs adjusting. 2. The idler pulley is tight not allowing the tranie to stop. 3. The shifting keys in the tranie are worn and need to be replaced.

I have the 917.259580 1997 6 speed Manual and have the same problems as the op, The mower shifts ok with the engine off, when the engine is running in a gear will not shift untill the engine is turned off. Will follow Rivets suggestions and taking a close look at the caliper pins and brake pucks.
