Need to replace a B&S. Compatibility?

Thanks for the help. Would a 33S877-0001 be the essentially the same as a 33S877-0019-G1 Looks exactly the same just no muffler (which I wouldn't use anyway). Would the type mean the difference in it working in my mower or not?

Need to replace a B&S. Compatibility?

Hi all, The craftsman motor in my riding mower is trash. I tried replacing the piston rings, which definitely was the problem, but it's starting to burn a lot of oil again. I'm going to just replace it at this point. The model of the B&S is 31P977-0635-E1. How can I find out what's...

Craftsman 917.28712 runs fine but white smoke

Just wanted to report back that I replaced the rings and no more smoke! I put a new carb on it and it need a little adjustment. It's surging so I think that means not enough fuel is getting through, right? It's a brand new carb and wasn't doing it at first, but started to after running for...

Craftsman 917.28712 runs fine but white smoke

I already returned the leak down tester, or I'd do a test with the rocker removed so valves stay closed, and with some oil in the cylinder. Might be worth me getting another one. There was definitely air noise from both the OHV cover and the dip stick. It doesn't have any problem starting up...

Craftsman 917.28712 runs fine but white smoke

So I did exactly this and same thing. I replaced the carb (cheap) and same thing. I'm thinking I should crack her open now. Not sure what else to try. When I do, I'll check the rings. if they're stuck, should I just clean and free them, or put new ones on. If new ones, do I need to hone...

Craftsman 917.28712 runs fine but white smoke

Thanks for the replies. If it turns out I do need new rings, do I have to hone the cylinder, or could I try just replacing the rings and see what happens?

Craftsman 917.28712 runs fine but white smoke

I gently cleaned the surfaces of all the old gasket before I put the new one on. When I put the 2nd head gasket on, because I thought I did something wrong the first time since it was smoking exactly the same, I didn't see any damage, marks or discoloration on the old gasket. Honestly didn't...

Craftsman 917.28712 runs fine but white smoke

Hi Mark, I had the blower housing off, and besides some caked-on dust, there's no other obstructions. I took off the breather tube and it's clear. Air filter's fine. valve lash is set per spec. What's my next move? Thanks so much for the help, btw.

Craftsman 917.28712 runs fine but white smoke

Bump Anyone have any thoughts? Should I buy a set of piston rings? Do you think I'd need to hone the cylinder or anything?

Craftsman 917.28712 runs fine but white smoke

B&S 31P977 0635 E1 070328ZD I did a compression test and it was 120psi The plug looked clean, oil around the threads. I did a leak down test and it was 60%. Noise coming our of the oil fill tube. I could hear noise coming out from the valve cover too (probably expected). So I guess it's...

Craftsman 917.28712 runs fine but white smoke

Hey everybody, So I have a Craftsman 917.28712 riding mower, I think from 2007, that was sitting a while, but didn't see a ton of use. It starts fine, runs fine, idles fine, power is fine, didn't overfill the oil, air filter doesn't have oil in it.....but it tears through oil. It puffs white...

Is this a blown head gasket?

So I did the gasket again and I made sure I cleaned the surfaces really well. I torqued it down evenly too. I noticed one of the two valve caps was missing, which would explain why it ran, but sounded horrible. Now, it runs great and sounds great, but it STILL blows white smoke. It comes and...

Is this a blown head gasket?

So I replaced the head gasket, but it's pretty much acting the same way. It sounds really "pingy". Pretty obvious ticking more than other similar motors I've heard. It's starts smoking only after like 15min of running, then it's pretty steady and relatively heavy. I honestly didn't see these...

Is this a blown head gasket?

Thanks! Researched replacing a head gasket, and it doesn't seem all that difficult, so I think I'm up to the task! Thanks again for the help

Is this a blown head gasket?

Craftsman Model #917.287121 with a B&S Model #31P977-0635-E1. It smokes like crazy, but not consistently. It will slow down or stop all together for a minute or two, then start back up again especially when there's a load on it like when I start the blades or speed up quickly, but it can start...

Weird one! I'm stumped with my Ariens snowblower. (video)

Welp, after a ton of research, I found it's the pressure relief mechanism, which is usually on the camshaft. It's activated when you first start the motor so a little bump is added to the cam to add an additional movement in the intake valve to release pressure, then releases or retracts once...

Weird one! I'm stumped with my Ariens snowblower. (video)

Hi guys, so it's acting like it's hydrolocked or something, but it's not. When I pull the cord, it rotates smoothly until I hit a point where it locks up and is really hard to pull. You can, but it's too hard to be able to start it. Here's a video of it: The pauses are when it hangs-up. This...

    Maxa generator: correct frequency?

Hi All, I have an old generator from my Father in law that I got running, but I'm not sure the speed is set right, so I'm afraid to plug anything into it. It's a 4000W "Maxa" which I think is made by Coleman, although it doesn't say it anywhere on it. The motor is a Tecumseh HM80. It seems to...
