Next suggestion is to remove the top fan/ engine cover and clean the engine cooling fins. Air cooled engines are critical about proper cooling from the flywheel fan. Chaff, dust and debris gather in the fins then cooling is quickly compromised.

If you really want to get a puzzled look on their face, ask them to bring in the missing parts so you can weld each of them back together and charge them $150.00 per blade. It takes a minute for that to sink in with some people.

Some starters have metal pinion gear option, but it has to have the correct tooth count. The other suggestion is to replace the entire pinion assembly because the spiral section wears also and that will also increase gear teeth wear.

I have a bad scar in my shin caused by a push mower blade fragmenting like one of these shown. People don't realize that checking and replacing blades are part of normal equipment maintenance. Mowers don't like when blades start coming apart.

Go to Google, then Part Tree or Pro Parts Direct and look up Briggs and Stratton using the numbers stamped into the valve cover.

Sounds like you are on the right track, debris gets in and then rust accumulates. Keep soaking and working it good.

I suggest you check Parts Tree for a replacement coil. You will need the rest of your numbers stamped on the starter cover.

Where are you located? Are there any mower repair shops or salvage operations in your area. Finding a good deck for one this age might be quite a challenge. Many of the LA series mowers had similar decks.

Does this only have the single 20A fuse? Has there been jump started going on? 308 hours on a PTO clutch is nothing for one of these machines. I would suspect a rub through in the harness somewhere. Usually, I install a 20A automotive circuit breaker while I chase these kinds of problems down.

I agree with a blocked fuel cap vent, especially if you can mow that long. The excess heat is created because the fuel mixture is getting leaned out and starved from the carburetor. Fuel also cools the cylinder when ideal combustion occurs.

To run parallel on a hill you need a 50 lb. wheel counterweight on one side (uphill side) as a minimum to maintain traction. Loop around and always keep the weight towards the rise of the hill. I still use a 1980's Snapper RER with a 30-inch deck, and it is a monster on any terrain.
