    Mower smokes/burns like crazy

Just thought, the worst thing about removing the deck is dealing with that awful spring from the back- it is a brutal task. Removing not so bad but putting it back- for Paul Bunyan. Anyone have an easier way, maybe using some type of lever action?

    Mower smokes/burns like crazy

Wow, you guys are great! Always there to inspire, and advise intelligently! Maybe I should repair this old mower, engine still going strong! Tecumseh never quits, at least those made 27 years ago!

    Mower smokes/burns like crazy

Thanks, Kent. I did check out the pulleys and they are good. I turned them by hand before starting the engine. Then I started the mower, and dropped the deck and BAM- the spindle/pulley assembly on the right collapsed!! The deck mounding area was totally rusted out. Not worth spending 400-500 $$...

    Mower smokes/burns like crazy

People, 1998 MTD rider mower, last month it cut grass nicely. Now, I start it up, it starts up nicely, and lower the mowing deck to 1st notch and mower starts smoking like crazy from underneath. I figured belts. The smell is of burned rubber. Blueish white dense smoke. Blades never even turn...

Cant source belt guard for my old MTD

People, I have a MTD rider mower, and the parts list shows the belt guards as 783-0343A. Usually, ebay or amazon has such parts but I could not find my part #. UNLESS there is a parts # change. Can anyone advise on this? Should I be looking for a new part # for my 2 guards? Thanks, people.

    Mower wont start, battery good.

No more problem, people, I forgot to reconnect the blade connector to the solenoid after reinstalling it. How dumb......... Mower starts now. Thanks anyway.

    Mower wont start, battery good.

People, MTD rider mower from 1998, 13 HP engine. Battery voltage is around 13.0 or so. I turn the key ON and no start. I check V at both terminals on the solenoid, and strangely, both teminals show 13V, even without the key being turned in the ON position. But the V at the starter is zero. Am I...

Good to now, Thanks, Mpar. Not sure why that site mentioned diesel..........

Are John Deer engines (Yanmar) reliable/durable?

People, Need a new rider mower, I guess 42" cutting is about standard. Looking at a Deer. Had an MTD for 27 years and its Tecumseh engine would never quit. Most other mowers offer a B&S and I hear they are not that great(?). Also, I understand it is a diesel, not gas. Is diesel a smart option...

    Starter shaft stuck/tight

Thanks, IL. The engine plate shows ohv13-206820B (H). But are the #'s stamped on the starter itself useless (the 36914)? Why are they stamped on the starter?
  16. R

    Starter shaft stuck/tight

Thanks, IL. I got 26 years out of it, not bad. But curious- do you think that would account for why I am getting only 6-7 v with started having been mounted on the mower? What would cause that? Now, where to buy a new one......There are 2 #'s listed on back of the starter- on top is the 36914...

    Starter shaft stuck/tight

People, MTD mower from 1998, tecumseh 13 HP engine. new battery, and voltage at starter shows only 6-7v but when red hot wire terminal is disconnected from the starter bolt it does show 12.7V, same as on battery terminal. So I removed the starter suspecting that was at fault and put it on the...

    Corroded ring terminal, battery cable

OK, heres what I got for readings so far, to start: Battery V is 12.1 (between the 2 posts). With key OFF: V between the 2 heavy terminals (not the SPADE connector that has the thin wire) 11.85V. With key ON: zero V Key OFF: between heavy left terminal and spade connector terminal zero V...

    Corroded ring terminal, battery cable

SN is 1C048C20044, , model 13A4667F118 MTD. Thanks, Star, for detailed follow up. It is starting to be clearer now. Will repeat tests and answer some of the questions you posted. Then go from there. It has cleared up now, trying to go out there again to do more tests............ PS: solenoid is...

    Corroded ring terminal, battery cable

It's raining today, so cant do any testing on the mower. But maybe Monday when the rain is over. I am a basic learner, struggling, with the help of any member offering here, much appreciated. But when it turns to uncalled for anger and resentment with accusations and criticism on top of that is...

    Corroded ring terminal, battery cable

But, Rivets, on my post #49, I said the 2 terminals on the solenoid. Am I missing something? There are only 2 main terminals (that connect to the heavy main wires) on that, the other is the spade post, to the very thin wire.
  22. R

    Corroded ring terminal, battery cable

I have sanded down any possible oxidation on the terminals. Also, new copper hot wire on battery. With a new solenoid, where could there be the V drop?
  23. R

    Corroded ring terminal, battery cable

Across the 2 terminals of the solenoid it reads around 3.5-4.0. Fluctuates. And on far side of solenoid (terminal on right side) to the spade connector with ignition on , 2.0V or so. At starter, key on, 4-5V or so. Something is messed up.
  24. R

    Corroded ring terminal, battery cable

Thanks, Rivets. If I have just 12.14V on battery I have a bad battery? If I need 12.4, I understand, I probably have a weak battery. For starters! Should I even bother with all the other testing?
  25. R

    Corroded ring terminal, battery cable

OK, wil do. Will need a helper for that. But if this helps- battery V with no load is 12.14.
  26. R

    Corroded ring terminal, battery cable

So, if a test light that lights for 12v light up it does not mean you are getting 12V? Why do they call it a 12V test light? If I get a helper to turn the engine over and I test for V with meter I need at least 9V? I didnt know. That seems too low, no? A starter will turn over with just 9V?
  27. R

    Corroded ring terminal, battery cable

Wow, so many post here that offer good info! Thanks. But UPDATE: I installed a new solenoid as well (after replacing the cable with new copper!). And mower still does not even turn over. I got a 12V test light and got a light on the IN of the solenoid, an OUT of the solenoid (with switch ON)...

    Corroded ring terminal, battery cable

People, MTD mower turned over a bunch of time, weakly, and never started. So I cleaned off the corrosion from the positive battery cable and noticed the terminal on that red cable has ben reduced by corrosion over 26 years to about 1/2 the surface it originally had. Does this make a big...

    Cant identify fuel filter

Wow, that it! But 2 days ago I ended up ordering the one from Amazon. I got it and I have one question- there is no flow direction arrow on the filter. I blew into it both ways. Should I assume it can be mounted either direction?

    Cant identify fuel filter

People, Have a MTD rider, model 13A4667 F118 (model 667 for short) from 1998, with Tecumseh engine 13 HP. The manual diagrams list EVERYTHING but the fuel filter. I also looked at the tecumseh fold out pages, and nothing. Does anyone have an item/code # for my fuel filter based on above...

    Spring woes

    Spring woes

People, Have a MTD model 667. 1998. I replaced the deck belt and in the process I had to loosen the belt tension in order to pop on the belt to the main pulley, so I released that big tough spring that clips to the left side of the transmission bracket. I neglected to take note of where it...

    Speed control messed up

Thanks, but those #'s are not listed in my parts diagram. I show 754-0370 and 754-0280. But why does my speed #6 go fast as heck if my belts are old? One was replaced last year and I mow only about 8x per year.
  43. R

    Speed control messed up

Then there also TWO different variable speed belts. Which one? My MTD is model 13A4667 F118, if that helps. Thanks again.

    Speed control messed up

MTD Rider, from 1998. Speed stick goes from 1-6. Lately any setting from 1-5 goes sooo slow, like never before. The difference between 1 and 5 is hardly noticeable, and when going up a slight hill the mower almost stops, until the ground levels out and mower speeds up a bit again. BUT when speed...

    Impact driver vs impact wrench

    Impact driver vs impact wrench

Got the new shaft, and it fits nicely. I dont ever remember there being a washer between nut and blade to take up the void space...

    Impact driver vs impact wrench

Wow, I didnt know! So, clicking the 1st site, I now learned I can buy just a shaft as the rest of the spindle is good, just the shaft is chewed up. I will call them tomorrow when they open and inquire how to buy one. I also will keep this link (and the other 3) for future reference. And thanks...
