Just thought, the worst thing about removing the deck is dealing with that awful spring from the back- it is a brutal task. Removing not so bad but putting it back- for Paul Bunyan. Anyone have an easier way, maybe using some type of lever action?

Thanks, Kent. I did check out the pulleys and they are good. I turned them by hand before starting the engine. Then I started the mower, and dropped the deck and BAM- the spindle/pulley assembly on the right collapsed!! The deck mounding area was totally rusted out. Not worth spending 400-500 $$...

People, I have a MTD rider mower, and the parts list shows the belt guards as 783-0343A. Usually, ebay or amazon has such parts but I could not find my part #. UNLESS there is a parts # change. Can anyone advise on this? Should I be looking for a new part # for my 2 guards? Thanks, people.

People, Need a new rider mower, I guess 42" cutting is about standard. Looking at a Deer. Had an MTD for 27 years and its Tecumseh engine would never quit. Most other mowers offer a B&S and I hear they are not that great(?). Also, I understand it is a diesel, not gas. Is diesel a smart option...

But, Rivets, on my post #49, I said the 2 terminals on the solenoid. Am I missing something? There are only 2 main terminals (that connect to the heavy main wires) on that, the other is the spade post, to the very thin wire.

I have sanded down any possible oxidation on the terminals. Also, new copper hot wire on battery. With a new solenoid, where could there be the V drop?

Across the 2 terminals of the solenoid it reads around 3.5-4.0. Fluctuates. And on far side of solenoid (terminal on right side) to the spade connector with ignition on , 2.0V or so. At starter, key on, 4-5V or so. Something is messed up.

Thanks, Rivets. If I have just 12.14V on battery I have a bad battery? If I need 12.4, I understand, I probably have a weak battery. For starters! Should I even bother with all the other testing?

OK, wil do. Will need a helper for that. But if this helps- battery V with no load is 12.14.

So, if a test light that lights for 12v light up it does not mean you are getting 12V? Why do they call it a 12V test light? If I get a helper to turn the engine over and I test for V with meter I need at least 9V? I didnt know. That seems too low, no? A starter will turn over with just 9V?

Wow, so many post here that offer good info! Thanks. But UPDATE: I installed a new solenoid as well (after replacing the cable with new copper!). And mower still does not even turn over. I got a 12V test light and got a light on the IN of the solenoid, an OUT of the solenoid (with switch ON)...

But in the photos it is misssing the spade connector. My mower has the solenoid with a spade connector.

Whew, got it done. used a twisted steel cable, looped it and hooked it to the spring end. Then the other end of cable , I twisted it multiple times around a 1x2, and pulled like mad until the spring hooked! Undid the cable, and all set. I have done many maintenance tasks on this old mower but...

Thanks, but those #'s are not listed in my parts diagram. I show 754-0370 and 754-0280. But why does my speed #6 go fast as heck if my belts are old? One was replaced last year and I mow only about 8x per year.

What do they call transmission belts on the parts list? Drive belt? I do not see anything listed as transmission belt. I do see a V belt on the list.

Got the new spindle shaft, it fit nicely. returned the defective ebay one. Tightened up the nut to 90 lbs with torque wrench. All went well. Big thanks to all here who helped me out with so many tips!

Wow, 95 lbs, never knew that. I always just tightened it up as best I could. I doubt it was 95 lbs. That is like the lug nut on my GM car!

Got the new shaft, and it fits nicely. Now, when I dry fit the new blade onto the bottom sprocket, then thread the old nut on it the nut bottoms out before masking a snug contact to the bottom of the blade. I dont ever remember there being a washer between nut and blade to take up the void space...
