    An index or business card is a good gap tool. Remove the plug, rotate until magnetic attraction pulls coil and card tight to flywheel, tighten the coil screws. Rotate...

    Take a look at the oil sump sometimes numbers are stamped there.

    Looks if Rivets got there before me...! 23A model number and the 703010 is the type number and has its been said around the 1950's, and was a good engine at its time.

    You should have no volts (0 volts) across the two big leads, ie the one from the battery and the one that goes to the starter, until you turn the key to start.

    You should be able to just replace the needle and seat....also make sure that the float is not leaking.

    The crankcase can be checked thoroughly for leaks with the carburetor and crankcase tester and the vacuum pump, which will be in the service manual for that machine.

    I have made 100's of test with a multimeter this way and I have never damage one yet, and I still get called out to test them for a friend who runs a repair shop,

    you have ask to explain how to do...
