    Engine Pulley Removal

It could be causing an overheat but I've personally never heard of that problem. I'm not an expert there though. Probably wrongly on my part, I tend to leave rusted or damaged exhaust alone because I don't care enough about noise to justify the cost of a new part lol.

Is it safe to have an additional hole drilled in the flywheel?

Thanks y'all. The fan doesn't interfere with anything if that's what you meant by foul. It runs right. I should have thought of using some tapping but I'm sure it's fine.

Is it safe to have an additional hole drilled in the flywheel?

Well thanks for the advice. I pulled one off of a different engine that I'm realizing is a lost cause. Someone had seized it and I unseized the piston, but the connecting rod and cylinder walls were chewed up. So, It donated a flywheel to the cause. I had to use the puller, no broken bolts this...

Is it safe to have an additional hole drilled in the flywheel?

Hey everyone quick question, just need some advice. Long story short, I restore junk mowers to sell. I'm working on one with a sheared key. I used a puller on the flywheel but a bolt broke off in one of the puller holes. So, I drilled a new one closer to the center of the flywheel and pulled it...

Lots of resistance pulling on cold starts

Well have you checked the oil? What type of mower is this on and what type of engine? It somehow sounds like all film strength is gone from the oil or something since it slowly becomes easier to pull. Or the compression release is functioning but only after a long time.

    Engine Pulley Removal

It does look like you needed 756-9978B just based off of visual inspection of the old pulley.

Keeps running but won't start when pulling the cord.

Oops, looks like someone beat me to that. Regardless the point is you should also check on your air vane and thermal arm now to make sure they're working too. One thing you could try is to manually operate these linkages to see if you can get it to start. Do so with caution of course. Hold the...

Follow along with this video you might find it quite helpful. Taryl uses made up words sometimes but this video is very thorough and the mower he is repairing had a similar issue to yours.

Keeps running but won't start when pulling the cord.

Gas leaks are kinda tricky sometimes because of the way it flows, in my experience, gas leaking from anything from the fuel line to the needle and seat to the upper or lower o-ring/seal all look similar. If the bowl nut washer is leaking and you got a new one from the kit, try putting the old...

Does anyone know why Briggs made the L head engine 190cc engines and called them 6.50, 6.75, 7.00, 7.25 etc.?

I don't know about the blades personally, never thought about it. If one is heavier than another it could possibly affect RPMs, although I wouldn't think it would at idle because the job of the governor is to make sure that a consistent RPM is maintained with varying loads. I would not bother...

Does anyone know why Briggs made the L head engine 190cc engines and called them 6.50, 6.75, 7.00, 7.25 etc.?

Well for RPMs there should be a spring attached to a tab that controls the carb throttle. If you bend the tap the RPMs will adjust. I don't remember which way you bend it right now but a little experimentation will help. Here's a picture of the spring and tab. I have the carburetor and fan...

Does anyone know why Briggs made the L head engine 190cc engines and called them 6.50, 6.75, 7.00, 7.25 etc.?

You only have the first part of the engine model listed, but from what I can tell from the number you gave (and experience with walk behind mower engines) you don’t have needle bearings for the crank. Probably plain bearings. A set of piston rings is about 20 dollars. So pretty cheap, assuming...

    Mower Belts, Pulleys, and Deck

Well I used it a bunch today with mostly no problem. I found a free bagger system and installed it, used that to clean up after the storm easily instead of blowing leaves. It worked great. However, I went to take it up my neighbor's driveway and clear it off for him (just to be nice) but I ran...

    NGK Spark Plugs. Recent quality

My work in Small Engines has only increased my disdain for big government. Everything the EPA has done for small engines sucks. Crappy gas cans, crappy 2 stroke carburetors, crappy 4 stroke OHVs, spark plugs, etc. It's a frickin lawn mower! And of course more regulations = more expensive product...

    NGK Spark Plugs. Recent quality

I'm not a shop owner but I do a lot of small engine work from my house when I can... I've fixed 6 push mowers for neighbors so far this season, and repaired several trash picks and a tractor (thanks to this forum might I add! Appreciate it!) I got 4 leaf blowers, worked on some string trimmers...

    Engine Pulley Removal

That's unfortunate. Glad you figured out the issue. I had an engine once where I completely overlooked the head gasket, and tried everything else first. Felt stupid when I looked at it carefully and realized the head gasket had split clean in 1/2 and the piston deck had 1 part while the head had...

    Mower Belts, Pulleys, and Deck

I might just run it until something happens cuz I already have $200+ in this tractor and I've only made $130 mowing so far... although that's not awful. I drove it 1.5 miles to a job today, cut the whole 1.5 acres, used it to drive around and spray round up (because I was too lazy to walk) and...

    Mower Belts, Pulleys, and Deck

Upon reevaluation this thing sounds terrible. Maybe that's been the source of my problem all along. I'll of course finish the belts and pulleys, but I think this needs attention. It sounds so far gone that I should just run it while it lasts and look for a cheap replacement. Edit: should...

    Mower Belts, Pulleys, and Deck

Once I get the varidrive sorted out I'll drop the transaxle and repack the grease. I wish a gasket existed so that I could use transmission fluid. Maybe I can make one out of cork. I don't think my bearings are in good shape in the spindles so I'll take a look at them. The belt is cracked and...

    Mower Belts, Pulleys, and Deck

Correction again, sorry y'all. It makes no unnatural noises in neutral, but if I push it in gear it is noisy. I can push it in gear easily with all the belts and pullies off, and can even get it to move (With much resistance) when everything is together, in gear. I don't think that's supposed to...

    Mower Belts, Pulleys, and Deck

It also makes a bit of audible noise when pushing in neautral. Not a squeaking but like a grumble. Not grindey, but like you can hear parts meshing. Edit: The noise may have to do with the brake dragging but I don't think so.
  23. TylerFrankel1

    Mower Belts, Pulleys, and Deck

Well I went around and took the rest of the idlers off. They all spin pretty well but I can tell there's no good lubrication left in em. I'll replace them. I got off the variator pulley which I'm going to add a bolt to so it stops working loose. I got the old belt out and the trans pulley off...

    Mower Belts, Pulleys, and Deck

I get what you mean. I did have to drill through the top, and sure enough, I found the nut there. Not welded to the frame of course. That would be too easy. I would have bought a nicer lawn tractor for myself if I had money (or even an intent/need to get one), but this was just a trash pick. I...

Thank you, I've always wondered why these have an air vane and an internal governor and the thermocoupler. I figured the air vane and internal governor just worked together for some reason.

I think I see the bump

Sucks that they won't fix it. Perpetrator of Lawn Mower Neglect and Abuse. I'm working on a tractor right now (that Bronco) that was probably a similar case. It wouldn't crank, they probably assumed it was more severe than it was, and then it rotted in the yard. It's probably not worth salvaging...

I think I see the bump

I have a Briggs 31p777 sadly. I'm waiting for it to blow up! I thought it was blown up when I got it because it wouldn't turn over, and went through the mess of disassembling the engine, only to find it in-tact, and realized my valves were adjusted wrong and the connection to my car battery via...

I think I see the bump

Sorry, I made that comment before I saw your response to the other. I will just replace them. Mower Belts, Pulleys, and Deck

Good to know about WD-40. I hope you're right about the pulleys from underneath. I watched a video where Taryl Fixes All replaced them on the same style mower I had and he said you had to drill it because there was a nut up there that isn't welded so it'll just spin around when you try and...

I think I see the bump

You said you replaced the drive idlers. The ones on my tractor all spin freely but noisy. I have been reluctant to take the pulleys out because I have to drill a hole in the floor of the tractor to get at a nut. I was wondering if it would be ok to procrastinate more as long as I spray them with...

I think I see the bump

The customer is making a mistake, not uncommon. A bigger battery isn't gonna solve the busted metal or likelihood of it getting worse. Spring holds the compression release so that it bumps the valves until centrifugal force overpowers the spring at high RPMs and flattens the compression...

Keeps running but won't start when pulling the cord.

Fair enough. Took one apart today just for maintenance and hard starting and the seat was slightly swollen. Fixed that. No harm in checking the needle and seat. Disassemble it according to this video If you don't have the locking pliers they use on the fuel line then just drain what you can...

I was afraid that the loose variator was at fault. Ill try tightening it. I know they do the tug of war thing, it kinda reminds me of a cvt system. Pretty cool, pretty unreliable. I’ll go get a new belt and fix the variator to see if that helps. I’ll also be careful with that bolt. Think 8 foot...

I think I see the bump

It does seem pretty iffy as to if it's bumping or not. Before you tear it apart make sure the connection is tight at the starter. Take off the positive battery lead from the starter, then tighten down the nut that is left on the standoff. Then reattach and tighten the battery lead to the...

    Engine Pulley Removal

Looks like it should slide off, but I don't know about that particular model. Looks like it has the key 'built in'. Try hitting it with the torch until it gets red and then immediately hose it down. The rapid cooling sometimes breaks it loose. Worst case you could take an angle grinder to it...

    Free Briggs 17.5 I/C mid 2000s

Hey everybody! About a week ago a buddy of mine alerted me to some free equipment out for the trash. There was a lawn tractor and pressure washer. Mower Belts, Pulleys, and Deck

Was wondering if anyone has advice about noisy pulleys. I've heard that they should be dead silent. I personally don't see the harm in them being noisy as long as they spin freely. Sure, they probably are approaching the end of their life, but as long as they're checked frequently to ensure they...

    Drive belt problem

Huh. That's pretty odd. If it's getting hot it sounds like it's slipping, but you said you checked springs. I don't have a ton of knowledge beyond that about these pulleys. Hopefully one of the regulars on here can bring better advice.

    Mower Belts, Pulleys, and Deck

Hey everyone! I mentioned this in a post a while ago, but it was off topic for the post's original purpose, so I figured I'd make a new post about it. I have a Troy-Bilt Bronco Lawn Tractor that I got free of the street for trash. It just had valves out of adjustment. I fixed that, now the...

Keeps running but won't start when pulling the cord.

Nevermind I'm sure there isn't one if you haven't found one then. It would be noticable. Bright red, on the left of the front of the engine on the air cleaner. Maybe your auto choke isn't working then. Or maybe it is the needle and seat after all. I could be totally wrong. I just think it...

    Drive belt problem

Check all of the pulleys. If there are idler pullers check them too. Make sure that they spin freely with the belt off and don't have nicks/rust/grooves. If you have a pulley that is seized or sticking, or is badly worn, that's probably it. Also, are you sure you're routing the belt correctly?

Keeps running but won't start when pulling the cord.

Your engine is 128T02-3256-B1. It looks like you have a primer bulb on this engine. I'm sure you are, but if you aren't pressing that, your problem is there. I personally do not think it is a needle and seat issue, because you said that it runs fine until shut off. In my experience, an engine...

Briggs Coughing/Sputtering With No Load? Multiple Engines!

I'm gonna go nuts lol. I went to a different brand gas station today (I was using Shell, I went to a Quick Trip today). I got fresh 87 octane, 93 octane, and ethanol free 89 octane. I drained the carburetor and tank, cleaned the carb, and put in each fuel and ran the engine. After each run I...

Briggs Coughing/Sputtering With No Load? Multiple Engines!

Didn't think of that. I'll try scrubbing carbon out of them and put in higher octane gas to see if it changes. I wouldn't think the compression ratio would be high enough but it won't hurt to test. Maybe try some ethanol free too.

Briggs Coughing/Sputtering With No Load? Multiple Engines!

Hey everyone! I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this issue before. It's minor but it's driving me nuts, because I can't figure out what's happening. I have a ton of small engines, mostly Briggs powered, and this season I noticed that several of my L-Head Briggs with the Float Style...

Briggs engine kicks back when starting, runs rough, hard to start. But Ignition module, spark plug, flywheel key are fine?

I've also been a bit nervous about the flyhweel since I put a second hole in it. I don't think it would hurt anyone though since it's surrounded by the cooling shroud. I don't know though.

Briggs engine kicks back when starting, runs rough, hard to start. But Ignition module, spark plug, flywheel key are fine?

Well I finally bought a tap/die and a torque wrench. Instead of Helicoil I went a lazier route and decided to just tap it with 3/8 threads and use a 3/8 bolt with a lock washer I bought at Home Depot. That worked but I was stupid and rounded off the bolt by using a metric socket. So now I have...
