On that engine you will normally find all engine numbers on the valve cover or engine shroud. If you can’t find them look on the bottom of the valve cover, as someone may have installed them upside down.

Before you start changing timing, which I doubt is your problem, I would be removing the valve cover and check the valve clearance. You can google (Kohler engine repair manual) and find a service manual which will tell you how to adjust the valve clearance.

Your coil has either a hot open or hot short. What do I mean? The coil heats up during normal operation, but after they age the windings may either short to ground or breakdown. After it cools down they will return to their normal position and you can start the unit again and it will run...

If you would have loosenEd the throttle cable clamp and push the cable forward until the choke closed it would not have affected the engine speed. Better to do it this way than to start bending linkages.

Check your battery voltage while the engine is running. Should be 12.6+ DCV if charging system is working properly.

Many times the date of manufacture is need because changes or updates have been made to individual parts. Parts may have been updated, superseded due to supplier change, or design change.

A worn bearing will allow the axle to move, not allowing the gears to mesh properly.

Be careful when replying to the OP. I’ve got a very interesting conversation with him I’m trying to share with the experienced techs on this forum.

The used gear on the left is definitely worn. Check the axle for play, it should not move up/down or side to side. If it does, it may be the bearing Star posted and you have pictured.

Two things will cause this problem. First would be a worn drive belt. If it is three plus years old, time to replace. Second would be a a worn drive gear on the right drive wheel. Again it may be time to replace.
