GEAR OIL FOR OLD TROY BILT TILLER

Manufactured in 1982, I have a service manual which dictates use sae 90 wt OR sae 140 wt gear oil. Manual also says don't use multi-viscosity oils. I've yet to find straight 90 or 140 wt gear oil.

I've found tons of 85-140 wt heavy duty gear oil. I'm thinking that with the progress in oils since the manual was printed that this Multi Viscosity HEavy Duty Gear Oil made by Lucas would be safe to use in this tiller.

I need second opinions or advice on this.

    Thanks Much

Wow........... 45 views in about 4 hours and no one has an opinion or feedback? Let me phrase it this way.

Does anyone on this Troy Bilt website have a tiller?

IF you do, have you ever added or changed the gear oil?

    What kind did you use?

Have you tried Autozone, etc? It seems like I remember they carry just sae 90 weight gear oil. I do believe it covers all from 85 to 140 weight though but check out Autozone first to see what they have.

80-90 gear lube should be available just about anywhere and will work fine.

Re: GEAR OIL FOR OLD TROY BILT TILLER

I bought some 85 to 140 at Autozone, got home and read where it says use either 90 or 140 but not multi viscosity. I did an online search to see what other stores carried and I didn't see any straight 90 or 140 at any of the stores that I could go and pick up locally. I was wondering if it was kind of a thing of the past............ I'll keep on looking.

    Thanks for the responses

I was looking for 90W for the front axle on my Kioti and few years ago, and was told that they don't make straight 90W any more. Have also been told that you can't use GL-5 because of the yellow metal gears. Some of the newer oils are gl-3,gl-4,gl5.

I found somewhere on the Troy Bilt site that you could use 140 wt GL 4, so been looking for that and finally found one gallon at O'Reilly Auto Parts............... I hope it'll be ok 'cause it's in there now....................

Soooo, what will happen to the yellow metal gears if GL-5 is used? I just put 80W90 (Coastal brand?) in mine after draining the thick brown molasses out but I can't remember if it said GL-5 or not.

I've been told that the GL5 will destroy the yellow gears

Ok, from what I read GL-4 will be fine and I'll be dumping my GL-5 80W90 for the GL-4 140wt as soon as I get back in town. I won't be back home for 4 more days so I hope I have gears left!

GL-5 supposedly will "corrode" the yellow metals.
