Does anyone have wisdom and sage advice for getting an old 1980 vintage Toro model 22015 series 5001561 briggs/stratton model 191922 type 0163-01 to stay running without having to mess with the needle valve on the carb. I've cleaned the carb, replaced the diaphragm and spring. Checked to see if there are any vacuum leaks....Toro1980.jpg

Try this. With the engine running spray carb cleaner around the area where the carb is mounted to the tank. If engine speed changes the tank is warped, allowing an air leak, not allowing the pump to work properly. Let us know what happens. Also, you typed in the wrong model number, should be 131922

As a side note. How close is the metal handle hooking thing to the spark plug wire. In the picture looks close enough to arc.

On top of what has already been mentioned a couple of other things that have given me grief on these engines
1) the inlet manifold that runs across the entire engine from the car to the engine inlet valve ( directly over the exhaust ) cracks allowing air to be sucked in so the mower runs lean.
This gets worse as the engine heats up
2) has he engine become easier to pull the starter ?
No this is not because you are becoming superman, it is because the exhaust valve is no longer closing completely and this also gets worse when the engine gets hotter

I actually did and also had seen gas coming out from between the carb and the tank. I replaced with a new gasket and the gas stopped showing up. The engine speed didn't change when spraying......as for the 191 and not 131....fat fingers! Thnx

I did pull it off and checked for any cracks etc.
the pull is consistent and has great compression.
I will have to check the exhaust valve and will get back on that.
I replaced all the rubber boots connecting the air off the carb over to the breather intake.....
