Hello all,

I'm a new member from Tennessee and own a Stihl FS55 which I just got through taking apart becasue it wouldn't start and got it running (at least temporarily) by sanding the surface of the coil arms where they ride close to the flywheel. I suspect I'll soon be replacing the coil with a new one. I'll be posting a question soon about something I found in the process.

Thanks

Doug

Hi,

I live on a smallholding in Mid Wales UK.

Amongst other machines I own a Stihl FS55 Strimmer which i'm having problems with.

Is there a workshop manual available as a download/pdf etc?

I've tried everywhere but cannot source one.

I'll ask my question regarding the strimmer in the relevant section.

Re: New Member

I just picked up a really nice MS290 Farm Boss with an 18" bar at a moving sale earlier this summer and used it a few times along side my older Craftsman (Poulan Wild Thing). I hadn't mixed up a new batch of gas for the Stihl yet, so I was limited for the time to what was left in the tank. Wow, I was so impressed with the Stihl, I went out and found myself a MS192T to go along with it for doing trimming and pruning. I'll be putting the old Craftsman on CL one of these days.

WreckinBall00

WreckinBall00

Hello, everybody!

I'm brand new to this forum.

I'm basically a city boy from SoCal who tends to the family farm in Arkansas once a year. To do that, I am familiarizing myself with a new set of tools like a 20hp Craftsman lawn tractor with a 42" mower, A DR mower which is really like following a mule that brush hogs (also has a trailing mower attachment), an old Ford tractor with many attachments (brush hog, furrowing discs, a plow, and an attachment that seems to make rows of tilled soil), A Stihl 025 chainsaw, and an Echo 225 line trimmer.

As I only use this stuff once a year for a couple of weeks, I go through learning experiences all over again yearly. Repairs are almost a constant issue, as virtually everything needs some kind of care to get it up and running. Today, my issues are with the Craftsman tractor and the chainsaw. By visiting another thread and doing some reading, I think I've got the tractor problem on the run, as it surely a fuel starvation (clogged carb) issue that makes it only run in full choke. The chainsaw has me stumped. I used it for days with no issue, until I used it to cut up an old chicken coop and dulled the chain. I had the chain sharpened, and now it won't run. I can get it to start, but it won't idle for long with the choke on and it dies when I pull the trigger in idle. I dunno, maybe I'm flooding it.

Anywhoo, I'm here in the Stihl thread looking for answers.

Hello all,
My handle on this forum is Andy W I Am the chairman of building and grounds for the Smithtown NY. Historical Society. We have twenty two acres to maintain having one Toro commercial mower, three craftsman riders and one Kubota HST L2500 with a brush hog a Stihl BR600 blower and various other weed wackers and hedge trimmers and so on.

the main reason I joined this forum was because while servicing the Stihl BR 600 I pulled the spark plug wired out of the end that attaches to the spark plug and there don't seem to be any easy way to repair it with out replacing the ignition coil. So I ordered the parts and would like to know if anyone has done this repair before and any advice they could give me. from start to finish.

I would appreciate any help you provide.

Andy W

You just need to put it back together, it sounds like. If the metal spring is distorted too much, that is a cheap part, the hard part is getting that back up into that boot, it is like trying to un-birth a baby, so you will need some lube and needle nose pliers.
The 90 degree bend in the wire pierces the side of the wire in to the copper center, and shoved up into the boot keeps it all
tightly in place.

Greetings.

I've owned a Stihl MS250 saw that I used to extreme. I fell at least 30 very large trees with it, trimmed them, cut them into firewood, and then cut multiple neighbors trees and did a ton of trimming. That saw was amazing. I sold it last year to a neighbor whom is STILL using it at least once a week. You just can't kill it. What a great saw.

I currently have a Farmboss. Another great saw. I lamented for a long time between Husqvarna and Stihl. Chose a Stihl only because the Dealer near me is excellent, and Stihl seemed a little higher end than Husky since they do not sell in big box retail. Good choice for me. Husky is a good saw, don't get me wrong, I just happen to have had amazing luck with my Stihl saws. The current Farmboss is on track to at least match the MS250 reliability. Two of my homes are on very heavily wooded lots and the trees are over 30 years old. The Ash trees fell victim to the Ash Borer and have bit the dust. Lots of trees came down this year with that Farmboss.

My Homelite trimmer (25 years old at least) is on its last leg, so I will be replacing that soon with a Stihl trimmer. I just bought an electric Toro blower and hedge trimmer, otherwise I would own a Stihl hedge trimer and blower too. Good to see this kind of quality in a tool these days.

I am glad to be here.
I am (was) the proud owner of a new Sthil BG56 leaf blower.
Purchased new this past May it is used primarily to blow grass clipping from my small driveway ,and sidewalk .
It has probably had two tanks of gas ran through it, so it doesn't get a lot of use.
Though it runs ok I guess , my main problem is getting it started.
Though I Follow the Sthil starting instructions, to the letter, it isn't unusual to have it take 15 or more rope pulls to get it running.
Frustrating to say the least.
It has had nothing but the correct 50:1 mixture of gas used with Sthil oil, and ethanol free gas.
The dealer says my gas may be getting old, though this same mixture has my Shinwanda string trimmer starting on the second pull.
Anyway does anyone one know if this type of blower from Sthil is inherently a hard starting unit?

I'm a BRAND NEW Newbie. I don't normally join forums; but I'm desperate for an answer/help with my Stihl Chainsaw Model MS-310. I was born & raised in the SE Woods of Mississippi; but I joined the Navy and after my Tour was up, moved to the Great Northwest to live, hunt, & WORK. After 20 years of cutting Firewood with a Husky Chainsaw, I moved back Way Down South and was advised to purchase a REAL chainsaw....a STIHL. I was further advised that in order to enjoy trouble free continuous use of my Stihl, I should take it to a Stihl Authorized Dealer and have it annually serviced. I will honestly admit, I have a problem letting other folks work on any of my equipment; but upon the insistence of my oldest son, I relented this year (he volunteered to pay). I just started to cut some additional firewood for our Southern MS winter needs and discovered that the Chain is not getting any lubrication. Upon further detailed troubleshooting/investigation, I discovered all my Chain Lube Oil was coming out the front of my Stihl. (Lots of oil) As most of you longtime Stihl Owners know, Stihl is "Stingy" with the Maintenance info they make available! I have attached a pic of the hole where the Chain Lube is pouring out of.
I said all the above to ask this; "Can anyone please advise if there is something supposed to be in this hole? and if so, can you tell me what the part # is?"
Very Respectfully,
The NEW Newbie

Greetings.

2 Cycle Saws bogging down under throttle advance are usually either one of the following. I'll EMIT Fresh Gas and Air/Fuel filters and fuel line since you've checked that. I am also assuming your spark plug and magneto are generating proper spark.

Check your Spark Arrestor Screen behind the muffler. If this gets clogged, you will have power loss issues. The saw can't provide high RPM if this screen is blocking the exhaust.

Check the carb for gumming issues. Spray Carb Cleaner in there where you can. If the Spark Arrestor is clean and you have sprayed carb cleaner and you are still having this issue, you may need to pop off the carb and look at all the ports/bowl and make sure there is no issue there. Clean and service that carb if the above does not solve your problem. Gum and deposits from stale fuel are frequently the culprit of the symptom you have described.

You should never let your mixed 2 cycle gas sit in your saw when not in use. Either run it dry OR get a can of STIHL MotoMix pre-mixed fuel. That stuff has a shelf life of 24 months after opening the can, and will NOT gum or tarnish your carb or clog your fuel lines/filter. And, your saw will run better on it. For the casual-use homeowner's saw, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ONLY USING STIHL MOTOMIX. It's worth every penny.

Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like a fuel starvation problem, the carb is dirty inside, and you'll need to give it a good thorough cleaning. The rebuild kit is 12-15 bucks, but also price a new carb for it and weigh the difference. If your carb has adjustable hi and lo screws, try opening each 1/4 turn (left) and experiment. But it is probably dirty inside and needs cleaning and replacing diaphragm and pump (included in kit). You'll need numbers off carb eg. Zama s162 or Walbro k-121

Look at the muffler. If it has a 12mm nut with a hole for the exhaust to escape, remove the nut. Attached inside the nut is a screen which gets clogged from time to time from using outdated (paraffin based) 2-cycle oil. Either clean the screen or pinch it off with a pliers and discard. Reinstall nut and enjoy your blower. And only use Stihl ultra synthetic oil to prevent future problems.

Hello everyone, my name is Pete. I found myself looking for info about things I've never dealt with before, mainly chainsaws. It started after I inherited 4 Stihl saws from my later father-in-law. The problem is, I have no idea about the condition of any of them. I know at least one works because he needed to cut wood for his woodstove. He was a duct tape/bailing wire kinda guy, so some of them look like they need a little help.

What I'd like to do is go through each one, clean, inspect and repair. I'm hoping that someone here has an idea on the best place to get a service manual and parts.

Re: Welcome to the Stihl Forum memebers

I have retired to the center of France with my son and together we run a smallholding and our FS400 cutter is a very important tool for us. For ten years it has put up with abuse and a lot of work but now it is in the doldrums and needs a new lease of life, which we hope to find on this forum.

Hi! Dave from Indy here.

I had a neighbor so fed up with trying to get a Stihl FS 45 string trimmer running, he gave it to me. A shop charged him $35 and it was no better.

I help maintain a local mountain bike trail and I hope to get my FS 45 up and running so that I can help out with at the trail.

See you in the Stihl forum.

JUST enough

Hello! Name is George, and I have JUST enough equipment to take care of my 1/2 acre lawn! Of course, a guy can always use more! OK, I actually mow a couple acres of vacant lot, mostly to keep down the R.O.U.S.'s (Rodents of Unusual Size), but I did before I had the tractor. I have a few back issues and could no longer dig, or shovel snow, hence, the tractor, though the backhoe stays off of it most of the time. Not really new to the thread, just thought I would post the picture.

Not pictured: dethatcher, lawn sweeper, 70's Troy built tiller, and several chain saws.

Thanks, took me nearly 2 years to pull the trigger on that one, but then I just used good, sound, logic.

My neighbor has a Bobcat and would always come shove the snow out of my driveway. He never charged me a dime, BUT I gave him a $100.00 box of cigars every spring.

I craftily calculated, that if I had to do that for 170 years, that would equal the cost of the tractor!!

You've just GOT to suss these things out for yourself!

Forgot to suggest you visit the Walbro web site and download the service manual.
Regardless of which brand of carb is fitted they is only 2 types the rotary valve & the butterfly valve
Go here Parts & Serviceand use the Sthil cross reference to find the Walbro equivalent
Then go here Service Manuals and download the manual.
On either page the "Tech Tips" button will bring up a lot of useful how to videos.

Just joined. I have a (MM55) Yard Boss and an HL 100 (135*) Hedge Trimmer with pruner attachment. I also have a Cub Cadet Lawn Tractor and a Shindaiwa Grass Trimmer. I have had superior performance from all these, except the hedge trimmer. I'm not mechanically inclined, but can take care of maintenance and minor (straight forward) repairs. So, I'm looking forward to benefiting from members' knowledge. I will add input when I feel like it can help. I appreciate the opportunity to be a member.

Just joined the forum, and probably like other first time lurkers, I'm here as a homeowner who is baffled by a technical matter regarding my Stihl equipment and searching for answers.

I'll do my best to return the favor as best I can and hopefully contribute in a positive way, rather than just learn and leave.

I live in SoCal, so this is about the time of year (Spring) when everything seems to kick into high gear and starts getting out of hand quickly if I don't stay on top of it. Fall and Winter everything slows down and I usually get to take it easy on the weekends!

I have the normal assortment of power equipment to do the job. Mower, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, chainsaw, and blower.

I have a BR 400 backpack blower I bought used 10+ years ago. It has always taken too many pulls to start, but operated very well until now. It has a very weak intermittent spark and sometimes will run briefly. I concluded the coil is bad after replacing plug and checking kill circuit etc so I purchased a new coil from Amazon which is said to be the replacement for 4203 400 1301. It won't even mount in the frame because the secondary is on the bottom left instead of the top center. Other coils that appear to look right have one of the mounting holes too low and would appear to change the angle of the air gap assuming they would mount.
I think I need the original 4203 400 1301, but have not been able to locate it. The only marking on the original are Stihl and 11DA. I hope someone can provide guidance since I couldn't find any from Stihl and I wouldn't want to trash and otherwise much needed tool.

This is why I just bought an Echo chainsaw. BTW, I have a Stihl HL100 hedge trimmer w/chainsaw attachment, and a Yard Boss min-tiller. I rarely use these, so it was out of warranty, but only the tenth use when the starter cable messed up, on the hedge trimmer. I purchased the part from Stihl. The installation, without instructions (they don't have manuals, you tube videos or any kind of DIY help,) went wrong. I wound up having to have the dealer finish the job. They have a minimum of 1 hr labor, which costs as much as an airplane mechanic.

Ive been a long time stihl fan. back in 08, i was in skills USA in high school and took first place in washington state for small engine repair, which was held at the stihl plant in washington (centrailia if im remembering correctly) it was a fun experience.

Was given an fs45 that was hard to start. got her tuned up and running like a beast, then one day went to use it and on the first pull attempt i discovered that the cylinder and/or crankcase had flooded entirely with fuel. never could get her started after that.

We don't really have any great forums though so I stumbled on yours, hope you don't mind Aussies ?

Welcome Logman! First...Americans love Aussies and Australia. My mother's grandfather or great-grandfather (not sure which) came from Ireland. Things were bad there at the time and someone offered him and his brother an opportunity. Don't ask me how it came about, but there were two boat tickets, one for Amerikay and one for Australia. They had to choose their separate ways. Say hi to any Keatings down there for us. Of course, there may be a few down there courtesy of The Crown too. To them also!

First Stihl Purchase - FS50C

I was just hanging out in the Honda forum talking about my new mower and almost forgot that I bought a new string trimmer to compliment it.

I have used many trimmers, almost all electric over the years. About 15 years ago I bought my first gas one. It was a disaster. It broke down constantly and in those days I didn't have time to learn fix it myself. Now that I am retired I have more time to research things and learn to repair them myself.

In addition to the poor quality of my big box store gas trimmer 15 yrs ago, I have always had back pain from using them. I finally discovered they were all too short for me. At 6'2" those electrics and even the gas one made me bend over.

I did my research, including Echo, and settled on Stihl. I looked at both straight shaft and curved and settled on the longer curved FS50C. I used it today for the first time. Darn thing started on second pull.

I'd be interested in knowing if you can get a service manual for these as I like to take things apart eventually to understand them and be able to do the maintenance.

But my initial experience with Stihl and the FS50C is pretty good.

Thanks.

E

EvCox

Hi -- Ev Cox from central Ohio with a Stihl MS180C chainsaw with Easy2Start. That feature involves an additional coil spring which gets wound up by the pull-cord and then supplies the power to start the engine. Great feature!!! as I am old with medical issues.

First 2+ years the saw performed exactly as advertised. With only my 'pinky' finger, I could slowly pull the start cord (without fighting the engine compression) about 18 inches and then the EasyStart spring would kick in and crank the engine.

Early this year my grandson helped cut up some downfall. I cautioned him not to jerk the pull cord like a regular saw. Don't know if he did anything wrong but, ever since, it's as if the the EasyStart is not there -- pulling the cord immediately starts cranking rather than winding up the spring. The saw can - and does - run OK otherwise.

Had the saw in to two different shops but don't think they really understood how the Easy2Start works. I'm asking for solutions or detailed description of the parts involved. Thanks.

Hello Stihl Forum and Muhammad, thanks for the welcome!

I've have a number of Stihl chainsaws (029, 031, 041, 075, 076) that I use for milling and for cutting up firewood at our cabin. I recently picked up a couple of non-working Stihl trimmers (FS90av, FS55RC) and I could use some help/advice on how to get them working. The FS90av is an older trimmer from the 90's and the FS55RC is more recent. I've been able to get owner's manuals for both but I'd really like to find parts diagrams and service manuals for both before I start to take them apart. I've called Stihl and have gone to a few dealers looking for them but haven't had any luck finding them. Can someone help me out with these?

Thanks,
Roger from Seattle

I have all the stuff , parts/ repairs for a plain FS 55.
No idea what the RS bit vries but pm me I can send it to you direct.
Stihl will not allow any of their IP to reside on web server,

Got nothing on the 90 but have the 80-85 and the 83 and the 110.
One of them should be virtually the same .
Owners manuals for all those are available so if you can work out which looks the closest I can shoot that through to you as well.

I too, have a good size collection of STIHL parts manuals, I have the parts ONLY, manuals for your FS90-av & FS55-rc,trimmers, ALSO, the parts manuals for your, 029,031,041,075,& 076 saws. BUT... as (Bertsmobile1) mentioned,.. STIHL is a real BASSTERD about forcing the close-down of ANY sites links, displaying their manuals.. I can PM them to you but ..I need your word as a gentleman you will NEVER post these on the Internet, you CAN fwd in an E-mail or PM but you must be careful, STIHL manuals are VERY hard to get a hold of now, please excuse my OVER-emphasis on this, but somewhere down the line, someone else will need this info and should STIHL see the site's address it's GONE -- FOREVER !!
PM me if you agree, ...Boo

Stihl's unnecessarily antagonistic behavior towards entities possessing their repair manuals is one reason why I don't support Stihl.

I can understand, NOT wanting to release their service manuals, they obviously want the consumers to have to go to the dealers for service work, it might be a liability issue among others, BUT having access to a machines P/Ns shouldn't really be an issue, other than the fact they want you to visit the dealers for that info. maybe so once inside, the dealers can sell more of their product. or to lead you away from buying from a third party entity. They DO have some of the best equipment out there, so why be a friggen bunch of BASSTERDS about it ???? ..:smiley_aafz: ......:mur:

Rabby Tat

Hello all,

I bought a Stihl MS-210 and had nothing but trouble with it. I honestly spent more money trying to get this beast to run than I did purchasing it. Multiple shops and even trying rebuilding it myself a few times. The worst is a particular tractor company which happens to also sell Stihl... Happily, I complained to Stihl's regional rep and he put me onto one of their platinum dealerships (Abita Lumber in Abita Springs, LA) who fixed this saw for a very reasonable cost and it is been a joy ever since.

I really like this saw now that whatever the problem was is solved!

Hi,
I'm Mobilman44 - retired 12 years after 40 in the oil industry. I live in Spring Texas - in a nice middle of the road subdivision north of Houston. I've been in this house for 38 years and unlike most of my neighbors, I do all my own lawn/yard work and have done so since I was a kid. My current mower is a Toro, and my edger, trimmer, blower are from Stihl.

I am very pleased with Stihl (and Toro) products, and have to note that the majority of yard crews - and there are a lot of them here - use Stihl tools.

That said, I am having a problem with my trimmer, and I guess it best be brought out in a separate thread.

Glad you all are here, and I look forward to being around for some time!

I used the wrong oil in my MS250. Caused saw to not start. After replacing the spark plug and gas with good mix, the saw flooded. I returned the saw to the dealer for repair (twice), the saw starts but floods out when trying to restart it afterwarm-up. They told me this was a common problem. Very Frustrating. This product is worthless. As far as I am concerned i should have bought a Poulan.

I am from Plano, Texas and recently bought a Stihl electric mower. It is homeowner model but big battery that would do my lawn twice before needing a charge. New zoysia grass lawn. I cant get my mower to start despite the battery being charged. I have used it without issue half a dozen or more times this past summer. I will search forums for an answer to what I might not be doing properly this time. I also have a Sthl electric trimmer and plan to get a blower and hedge clipper all electric as well soon.

I will search forums for an answer to what I might not be doing properly this time. I also have a Sthl electric trimmer and plan to get a blower and hedge clipper all electric as well soon.

Go to the Stihl section on here and make a thread Mon Ami ~!~!

Howdy. I just joined. I have a Stihl chainsaw & weedeater.

I purchased my Stihl 032 around 1983 I think. I bought it at a local feed store.
This chainsaw has been amazing. It literally starts on the second pull 95% of the time.
I have replaced the carb twice, but nowadays I only use high quality ethanol-free fuel in it.
It's on it's third 20" bar, it's second sprocket, new rubber bumpers, I run only Bosch plugs, mix fuel at 40:1.
I've run countless chains, mostly chisel skip-tooth. I got a bench-mount electric sharpener at Harbor Freight that works fairly good.
In the 80's I made side money cutting/selling firewood from slash piles. This saw has done great every time.
I was looking at the new Stihl saws with I was in looking for a new sparkplug boot for the saw.
Hmmm... They are all so shiny & spiffy looking I'd never want to dirty them!
All repairs and adjustments are so easy on this saw, it's just great.

The weedeater? I don't know the model but it's pretty good. Maybe 12 years old. That also gets the 40-1 fuel mix. It's a great little weedeater.

Hi, my name is Rob and I own only 2 Stihl products. Both chainsaws, a ms170 and an older 031AV. The 170 replaced the 031 because the oldtimer only wants to idle and won’t rev up anymore. I’m just getting around to see if I can repair it myself and was looking for some tips to do that.

At least it has either Walbro or Tillitson carburetor which repair kit are easier to get. Most like the metering diaphragm is stiffen which would explain the throttle response problem. Stihl has made it nearly impossible to get the Zama repair kits now especially here in Tennessee. This very irritating especially with the Zama just outside Nashville.

Remove the starter and look at the flywheel. If there are 2 white moon shaped plugs on it, then it likely has points. Try cleaning and adjusting the points, and see if that changes how it runs. Set the points to .016

Like fish said there are 2 different ignition systems on the 031. If it says "electronic" on the plate it has the solid state ignition. Unless someone has changed the cover. If it doesn't say "electronic" then it is a points ignition. If it is the solid state ignition be careful not to spin the engine with the plug wire disconnected unless the kill switch is in the stop position. This can kill the solid state ignition and there are none to be found. I have an 031AV . Don't use it any more. Too heavy for the amount of power it has.

Cleaned and set them, no change. Seems to be oil coming out of the exhaust too. I have 50:1 gas mix in it, always have used that.

Sounds like the carb is a bit "floody". Take it off and have a look.
Those old saws had a rebuildable fuel filter, and the foam insert starts to break up after 30 years or so, and the remains of that foam filter collect in the carb, so you will likely find that crud in there.

#132

Hammermechanicman

Hammermechanicman

I would remove the muffler and check piston for scoring. If it is good move on to air fuel delivery. If it idles smoothly you can probably rule out crank seals. If it has original fuel lines replace them and fuel filter as they won't tolerate the 10% ethanol gas. Clean and rebuild the carb with new diaphragm and gaskets.

Probably from a badly worn sprocket, so put up a pic of yours.
If so, you would need a new chain as well.

GREETINGS to all Stihl equipment owners!

Also, if you haven't done so already, you can upload a user avatar (picture under your user name). You can do so by clicking on settings and "edit avatar" or just click here.

Greetings Stihl Forum Members,
Mr Richards here joining from Wales in the UK. I recently inherited an FS80 Brushcutter, purchased around 1986, with the original manual and price list, tool kit etc. I am wondering whether I can still get spares for this model? When I check on ebay UK, I can find many spares relating to an FS80 (mostly from China), but the images of, for example, a replacement carburetor do not look like mine. I am wondering whether there was a later version of the FS80....I try to include a couple of photo's of my model.

Bottom line is the tool looks a bit scruffy, but it has sentimental value, and I would like to bring it back to some kind of functionality, if not cosmetic excellence. The engine has some problems running. The plug looks clean, and I get a fat spark when I take out the plug and pull the starter. (I think the electrics are ok.) I can prime the carb, though the priming bulb is a bit brittle (definitely ready for replacement). Once running form cold, if I open the choke, the engine dies. If I leave the choke closed, it idles pretty well. It will idle for ever, almost, certainly 3 or 4 mins. If I rev the engine, I need to knock of the choke, and it seems happy, but then will only idle if I add choke. I have considered changing the low speed fuel screw, but never adjusted a carb before, so a bit nervous....but it feels like fuel starvation. My thought would be to replace as much of the fuel delivery system as is available, certainly fuel lines, filter, and pump diaphragm. I couldn't see a name on the carb, only scribed 'Japan'....no name. I would be glad to hear any news about trouble shooting this tool.
Thanks,
Mr Richard

Sounds like it is in reasonable condition.
Before you start playing with the carb, remove the muffler and see if it responds to throttle.
Wht you describe is typical of a blocked muffler either with accumulated soot or some small critters calling it home.

Like all old gear, some things are available & some are not .
Still made the FS 80 for a very long time so there were changes made over the production run.
If the carb has Japan on it then it will be an original Zama C1Q-S28D and both it , the direct replacement Walbro are still available as are the rebuild kits.
The shaft & clutch have replacement available that will fit and the only part likely to give you grief is the magneto.

#144

Mr Richards

Mr Richards

Thanks for the feedback Bertsmobile1. I did a bit more digging, and it seems the Zama carburetor you described is for a later model. I have the TK-DP10W.....(I include the design drawings in case anyone else has this model.) I have now found a service kit on ebay, but before I buy it I will take off the muffler as you describe and see what is living in there. Thanks for your help!

Yes, there were 2 different FS80s, you have the early Japanese version form the late 70s to early 80s, very hard to find parts for. It shares a lot of parts with the old Shindaiwa T25, and the old Green Machines. Oregon makes/sells a carb kit for it, for the old TK carb.

Hi:
I have had 2 FS 36's and an antique-looking FS50 weedwhackers fall into my lap. Non-running, of course, or that might've really hurt!?
Anyways, one FS-36 starts and runs but eventually starves out for fuel within a 30-45 seconds. A couple pushes of the primer and it will restart.Sounds nice.
The other runs if you put a few drops of fuel right thru the sparkplug hole.
The FS-50 has a recoil starter which works now and then and I couldnt get a pop out of it no way.
My question centers around if repairing these are worthwhile, perhaps they are some sort of vintage collector items?
I have an electric weed whacker which works wonderfully every time, but I hate to throw out classics for others.

Thanks!

The fs36s are actually IDC/Ryan/Ryobi models made for Stihl, but are decent trimmers if you get them running.
The primer is actually a "purge", it removes all of the air from the system. You still have to use the choke, which is controlled by rotating the black plastic cover over the air filter.
You will likely need to go through the fuel system and replace the fuel lines.

Here is a tech bulleting concerning the tank/lines.

Yes, there seemed to be gas leaking out from the case on both, but strangely enough, both stopped leaking after a few pulls on the cord. That was odd.
Thanks for the pointers and tech bulletin! I'll give 'em a closer look. Although nice looking units, looks as though I'm not going to go too much deeper if this runs into any money.
Many Thanks for your prompt response!

A carb kit and fuel line might be all it needs.
I found the air vent loose and it was the source of the raw fuel.
It runs a little better, but still dies eventually.
The other needed a new primer bulb. After I replaced it, it ran like nothing was wrong.
Both have sat at least 2 years previously.
The attachment you provided was very useful, thanks!

So the source of the leak was a cracked diaphragm. It takes so long to get parts mail-order, I have started to search out locals for my parts. A local has the rtebuild kit for the same price online, but I have to drive 50 miles round trip to get it! But, when I get home, I have it, so that sure beats waiting weeks.

Hi Stihl heads! I'm Kenny, from the West Coast of Scotland, inherited a wee garden business which I keep running alongside my career (normally I'm a Sound Recordist for TV/Film).

Stihl toys as follows;

FS50 (2004?) (with an FS45 shaft, making the best of two v old machines) just got this running again to discover the clutch is v worn, new clutch and drum on its way, this will be a back up machine)

Trusty FS50 (2010) which I use every fornight on 24 gardens from March to October, love this wee strimmer, one of the hardest working machines I own.
FS130 (2012) had trouble with this over the last couple years, had to replace the belly pan twice on it, so far so good this season, only comes out once every 14-21 days for one big garden. Anyone else had trouble with thier belly pan just cracking open?
SH55 newly carbed, not sure on the year, still running awsome.
HS 82 RC (2019) 30" and also 26" double blades, awsome kit.
HS 82 T (2020) 30" double blade, as awsome as it's partner, just neater on 'box'.

Learned loads about my kit in the last 5 years, still learning all the time I'm the only one to use it and service it, so only me to blame when it doesn't keep up. But I'm Stihl for life now...some of the family.jpg

Hi, All My name is dennis123 I have never joined a forum before so I am looking forward to what might follow. I have a second-hand Stihl HS 56C hedge trimmer. I have not used it yet, and wish to clean the spark arrester. However, when I locate the position of the arrester all I can see is a tube protruding approx 25mm and 8mm dia. This seems to go directly into the box, but there is no nut on it to enable me to unscrew it. Looking on YouTube they all have a nut on them.so I am at a loss of what to do. are there different types, or is something missing?

Then you would have the HS56CE which does not have a spark arrester. Note: the NGK CMR6H spark plugs are bad to fail so have spare one on hand.

Now if you had the HS56CEZ then you would of had a spark arrester.

Thanks for that information. However, the name on top, says HS 56c would that be incorrect.

I just have 1 Stihl product....an FS 66...my high school (47 yrs ago) buddy died and his wife said "here....something is wrong with it.."
I figured out the problem but Stihl doesn't make parts for that model anymore. I need a coil and can't find one anywhere. I've called the local repair shops looking for a used one to buy but no luck...Anybody have any ideas?

Hi, I'm Shane from Florida.
I have a FSA 56 trimmer, anybody know about those? I don't think they make them anymore.
Anyway, I'm debating expanding my Stihl electric equipment, since I already have the AK20 battery and AL101 charger, which apparently charges all Stihl batteries except the handhelds. I'm looking to buy a new blower, but Stihl has my options limited at the moment because all of the newer models do not come with the newer AP battery. Are they on a shortage of them maybe?

Hello. I just picked up a Stihl weed eater model number FS 55 RC. It is excellent. Much better than the battery one we got and returned immediately. Also have a vintage Stihl chainsaw from probably the 70s or 80s that I was given by a neighbor whose basement flooded and the chainsaw got wet. It runs great still. I’m a auto mechanic by trade but love working on anything and have recently gotten more into small engines. Glad to be a part of the forum. And the Stihl family.

I own 2 MS251 chainsaws, BR550 backpack blower, SH86 shredder/blower, FS110R line trimmer. 2 Troybilt law mowers, Troybilt 2410 snow thrower, Earthquake chipper shredder. I usually do all my own maintenance and repair. I even do vehicle maintenance and repair as needed.
My first engine overhaul was when I was in High School and my dad said go ahead and overhaul our mower. So without having a manual or Youtube, and having just tools, to took the Clinton engine apart, carefully putting the parts in several small cardboard boxes. My dad looked at what I had done and later brought home new parts to go into the engine. I reassembled it and it worked perfectly and with lots more power. That i s how I stated in small engine repair.

Hello all. Diemaker here from Michigan. Not exactly sure how I got started following the lawn mower forum years back but have continued to follow the Stihl forum now. I have a string trimmer, 2 chainsaws, and 2 backpack blowers. All are still running just fine but never know when I might need some advice about keeping them running fine.

Spark + fuel + compression = bang
One of the 3 is missing
So some where in the dark pull the plug out, lay it on a metal part and pull the starter
Spark = good , no spark , try a new plug
Still no spark take off the cover and remove the small wire form the coil
Spark = bad switch or chaffed wire , no spark = dead coil

Assuming you got a spark, next is to check using a can of carb cleaner
Remove the spark plug & spray as TINY amount down the plug hole then pull the rope
Engine goes bong = carb problem
Engine no bang = timing or compression
Let us know what happens.
