Was mowing about a month ago when mower appeared to run out of gas, but wasn't. Would not restart even after fresh gas added. Checked air filter, spark, compression etcetera w/o success. Need to get started to mow my yard asap! Plug and filter replaced last season...

you will need to remove the carb from the tank and thoroughly clean it, more than likely the pick up tube on the bottom of the carb is plugged, todays gasoline leaves alot of deposits
I had a 3.5 quit recently... seemed like a gas problem as well, turned out to be a bad coil. Made spark but not strong enough to run. Look at it closely, you may see some small innocent looking cracks.
