Exhausts are generally on the top except on snow blowers when they are on the bottom.
Reason is preheating the incoming fuel / air mix.
Needed in snow, not needed when mowing.
Inlet valve is open when the piston goes down
Exhaust is open when the piston is rising
Decompression happens just before top but is only open for a brief time.
