Hi what is the secret to removing the needle roller bearings in stihl hedge cutter gearboxes as fragile as they are they break up easy but you can never get the casing out! any sensible ideas?!

Why are you taking them out? You can try a magnet or needle nose pliers.

They have broken up....some rollers missing...you can get them seperate but I can never get the old ones out. You can only see the top face and they are in there well with a friction fit so magnet and pliers won't work unfortunately.

I don't know maybe a hook and pick set and tweezers. Never had one apart

So what you are saying is the bearing is a crowded race needle bearing that has broken up so the needles are all over the place.
You can get the needles out but not the steel case that was holding them.
If this is your problem then run a tap ( of the thread cutting kind) into the steel cage .
It will start to cut a thread then spin the offending item in the alloy you can then pull it strait out.
A healthy dose of heat ( oven , heat gun or BBQ, not a torch ) would not be wasted.
other than that you can cut, grind through the lip then grab the lip and twist it into itself.

Alas i thought the tap idea was a goer however the outer part of the bearing is bloody tough stuff and the tap just wont bite.....think they try and make it almost impossible to get out as a new casing has them ready fitted.
