I use (and recommend) a scythe for mowing and grass & weed trimming. No noise, no pollution (good for you, good for the environment), no vibration, good healthy exercise, simple, easy to maintain, no need for petrol (peak oil is upon us).

If you love the quiet outdoors, and want to hear the birds sing as you cut grass - use a scythe !

You can find some good youtube clips on scything, search for Peter Vido and you should find some good examples. Also search for "the end of cheap oil and the rise of the scythe" - a nice clip !

There are several "styles" of sythe, the standard American scythe is pretty heavy, so a bit more tiring to use. I prefer the Austrian scythe, which is a lighter weight. I don't get any kickbacks from them, but I recommend http://www.scytheconnection.com/ - also a great site for background information on scythes.

If you believe in man-induced climate change then you should stop using a petrol mower (EPA Statistics: Gas Mowers represent 5% of U.S. Air Pollution - see http://www.peoplepoweredmachines.com/faq-environment.htm).

If you haven't heard about Peak Oil, then you should read up on it - get ready for petrol prices spiralling out of control, and petrol rationing similar to the 1970's oil crisis - only this time, world wide. Read http://www.aspousa.org/index.php/peak-oil/ for an introduction to peak oil.

Half the people in the US wouldn't know how the use one and the other half would sue the manufacturer because they cut themselves.

Better than a scythe is a non motorized reel type push mower.
If you keep up with it and keep the blades sharp they will cut just as fast as motorized walk behind.
They even come with a grass catcher so you can remove the clippings.
Unfortunately you almost have to remove the clippings or the mower will clog the next time around.

You obviously are not 60 years old with arthritis in your hands................:confused2:
