Yes that engine can be rebuilt, any engine can be rebuilt, but is it worth the costs? It is going to be very hard to find rebuilt small engines, because the market is not there to justify the costs of rebuilding engines for resale.

I bought a GREAT DANE SUPER SURFER STANDER lawn mower with a 18 HP KAWASAKI Motor on it. The seller also threw In a used motor that came off of it, telling me it burned oil and he had no use for it. I took it home, thinking I could use the starter & carb. at a later date. But checking out the price of a new motor I thought I should try and rebuild it. ($ 1300.00 ) and have on standby in case I ever needed one. I've never done it before so I downloaded a manual and checked UTUBE and found every i needed to know a about small engine repair, fairly easy. Tore it down and cleaned it up.. New rings cost $33.00 New gasket set $82.00 ( every thing including seals ) Hears a couple of pics but I not finished yet. I'm pretty sure you can do it yourself. dde0e

Quite a bit more to it than a new set of rings on the pistons to do it properly..

Did you measure the cylinders for wear ?

How about the valves, guides, seats + valve job .

That's not even getting into the bottom end.

Yep, not that easy but not rocket science either.
First thing always should have been to watch look & listen.
Followed by test , measure & inspect

Unless it has done huge hours, run with no oil or no air filter the bores should be OK and so should the rings.
Did you measure the end gap at several places up & down the bore with both compression rings ?
What did the top of the pistons look like and even more iportant what did the inside of the piston crowns look like ?
Was there evidence of blow by on the pistons and if so where . thrust face or pins ?
Kawak us realy hard bores and fairly soft rings ( very common now days ).

Having said that they rarely need reringing however they do chew up inlet valve oil seals .
Two out of 3 smokey motors I look at are due to bugs blocking off breather holes
next in line is valve stem oil seals
Followed by leaking head gaskets ( applies tripple to B & S Engines )
Followed by way too thin synthetic oil
followed by too much oil
followed by worn rings
followed by cracked heads
Followed by bad valve faces.

If the gasket kit did not come with inlet seals you will have to replace them as 99% of the time pulling the valve past the seal ruins the seal

Even if I over look something on my motor rebuild, I'll be happy with the learning experience ?
