Does anyone have a patio garden? Which side should it be on, does it matter? Does it do better in different types of planters? Soils? Which seeds do better?

I think it matters how the sun falls and what kind of plants you intend to have. So if you have a lot of sunlight on one side, and want plants that need shade then you should plant on the opposite side. Also consider run off from the roof. You don't want all of your hard work drowned.

If you are buying plants, most labels will tell you how much sun, water & size of the plant. Naturally, bigger plants need bigger pots, be sure the drainage holes are open in the pots!

Wow, thanks for the information. I am new to patio gardening, I always just gardened in the ground but with space constraints, sometimes it is hard.

I don't have any flowers around my patio area because I am allergic to bees so I don't want to attract them to an area that I am sitting.

grnspot110 - Are those your gardens? They are beautiful. I have a cement base to work with just need something to go with on from there. Thank you for the wonderful ideas.

monica123 I planted a miniature peach tree in a planter I built.so far it 's doing really well and hopefully will bear fruit next year. it's not supposed to get over 3'tall and bears full size fruit. russ

Thanks, yes they are ours, we do quite a bit of gardening! The lard kettle was Dads, he kicked the dirt of his grave years ago for me planting things in his lard kettle! That was just a waste space for years, full of "nasty" red lava rock. I cleared out the lava rock & replaced it with homemade stepping stones with colored pea gravel patted int the surface while the cement was wet. Then surrounded the stones with colored river rock. Makes a good place for large pots with cherry tomatoes & flowers in large pots.

The birdbath garden idea came from one we saw in a nursery a couple of years ago.

Those are seriously impressive thumbnails! I had a friend who built and maintained her own koi pond. While I love nature, I've never been successful taming and shaping it that much!

These are mine so far. I have mostly herbs and edible plants in my gardens, I like being able to eat them when I am out and in the garden.

Nice ideas, maybe I will do something like this for this year and plan the flower beds for next year. After 5 yrs in an apartment I need some flowers and plants.

I would seriously be stifled living in an apartment, I could not survive without my ponds, flowers, plants, etc. I could not imagine life without both.
