Old Briggs runs for a minute then dies

Forgive the lack of detailed info, but its and old B and S 4hp on top of a Merry tiller rotorvator. If I suck a load of fuel in with a hand over the carb, or with choke closed, or simply by pouring fuel straight into the carb, it'll run fine. Then a minute later it'll stop dead. The fuel lines are clear, the fuel is new....

So is the fuel tank supposed to be pressurised by the solid metal pipe coming off the engine? I'm wondering if the diaphragm has got so old that it won't allow any pressure through to the tank, to push the fuel into the carb. I had a look at it, and looked pretty scruffy.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks
James

You need to clean inside of gas tank, remove & rebuild carburetor per B&S instructions or purchase a new carburetor. Also check fuel tank cap for replacement. Post model xxxxxx, type xxxx, trim xx from engine, thanks.
