I just purchased a new MTD lawn tractor and the manual states to change the oil after the first 5 hours, but it doesn't mention anything about changing the oil filter. Should I change the oil filter also?

How many hours before you will change the oil again?
If it's the full interval, I'd change the filter now. If it's another reduced interval, I wouldn't.
The break in grit and debris will be in the filter, you decide if you want to change it or not. the main reason to change the oil after five hours is to drain out the break in junk. the oil itself is fine, it is just the suspended junk that is in it that you want to get rid of.
