MTD tiller slipping out of gear

I have an MTD model 422 rear tine tiller (1997 I think).
The gear selector slips from tilling to forward drive after a few seconds of tilling.
I have replaced the shifter fork and the clutch collar.
I can feel the collar settle into the detent on the drive shaft but it just feels like it's not seated all the way most times
Any suggestions?

Thanks
Chad

Google: MTD manuals, your model number is 21A422016, see operators manual for all adjustments. Use OEM MTD parts if needed.

See page 5 in your operators manual for " Final Clutch Adjustment ".

Thanks but I don't think this is a clutch issue.
it kicks out of tilling gear in to forward drive as soon as torque is applied to tines
I have tried to recreate it with just the bearing plate on and the L side cover off so I could see what's up but have not been able to do so

There should be a screw. Flat head.
Turn it in one full turn. Under it is a spring and a ball that holds the lever in place.

Thanks CARSCW but I could not find the part you are referring to.
Anyway I have it fixed and tilling like brand new
The part causing all the issues was a 17tooth sprocket that had worn out enough to push the clutch collar out of tine gear when enough resistance was applied to the spinning tines.
It is part 41 in this pic

the worn gear looks like this

it should really look like this

Thanks for the suggestions
I hope this helps those of you with a similar problem
BTW this thing will be for sale this afternoon

Thanks for the info! I've got the same situation, replaced the same parts. I sure didn't notice the wear on that spur gear. I've got a new one on the way, I expect it'll do the trick.

Where do I find the instructions on how to replace it? I have model 21AA412A352
