MTD Rear Tine Tiller Clutch Repair - 21A-422B129 1I250K40071 (2000 model)

Bought unit used that appeared to be in great shape. Owner told me up front that it was mechanically sound but that the tines didn't turn.

Disassembled unit, split the gear case, inspected all parts and found all gears and chains to be in great shape but noticed the shift fork was bent and pins were sheared. Replaced the unit, reassembled and tines now operate but unit slips out of till mode.

I purchased a detent ball and spring and new clutch keys, but cannot find any literature or diagrams on how to repair as I want to review before disassembling again as that was quite a chore.

Can anybody provide any insight in regard to where I might obtain this info?

Please advise.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim,

Check out the thread "MTD tiller slipping out of gear", the problem was the 17 tooth sprocket (part # 41 in the diagram) was worn.

Also Youtube is a good how to source for fixes,,,chances are somebody has been there done that before you.

Regards

Jeff
