hi

i have lawn boy 10323 lawn mower

2 cycle duraforce 6.5hp engine

has spark.....but will not even try to start

even if i put fuel or carb spray directly in spark plug hole or carb it will not even try to start

engine seems tight..muffler tight....i took apart ignition coil and cleaned and regapped and still not start at all

the spark color seems to be white.....i tested outside of engine and grounded to engine...i installed a new spark plug and still not start at all...

any ideas?

flywheel key bent or damaged, to low of compression,

2 more items to check are the reeds and crankcase seals. You're not by chance close to me?, I live in Metamora about an hour north of Detroit, 30 minutes east of Flint.

checked flywheel key...is good
compression seems good

what else could cause no start via fuel directly in plug hole?

im near grosse pointe

dont know how to check seals or where to look....

You can check the bottom crankcase seal by flipping the mower on it's side (probably best to remove the blade and mulch fan) , remove as much grass as you can and follow the crankshaft up to the block. To inspect the top crankcase seal, you'd have to remove the flywheel. The crankcase seals look like big rubber grommets.

The last time the mower ran, did it backfire? If yes, then the seal was probably blown out of the crankcase.

Grosse Point isn't too far from me, if you want to bring the mower to me, I'd be willing to take a look at it.

Jeff

I never used it..i bought it from someone

Metamora is pretty far from me still...but i appreciate the offer

Im stubborn...and hate when i cant get something to work.....i have another one of these that ended up having a bad ignition coil..replaced and started right up

But this one does have spark...so im stumped

I would like to fix it if within economical reson

Is the cylinder already full of fuel and you are just flooding it more? Is the plug wet when you pull it out? Clear the cylinder and try starting fluid .

#10

S

shelby5041

Plug not wet.....no fuel in cylinder prior

I tried starting fluid first and it would not even try to start at all

So i then tried a spoonful of fuel in cylinder..and still will not even try to start

Do you have good spark ? Blue spark ?

#12

S

shelby5041

Even though i have a spark i ordered a new ignition coil for the hell of it..only 9.00 shipped

These models are known for bad ignition coils....i dont know why else it wouldnt at least try to start or even sputter with fuel and spark

Im stumped

The spark auppears to be white......but cant say for sure.....it didnt look blue

If you have compression (above 90 psi) and spark, putting fuel in the cylinder should result in engine running for a few seconds, If you have spark when you pull the cord you can rule out a safety switch, 3 parts create spark, the spark plug, flywheel magnet and cdi. I would make sure you have compression with a tester.

yes i have spark

will any spark work?...or does soark have to be certain size/color?

i dont have a comprrssion tester

You may have a week spark, putting on a known good running cdi may rule that out, compression tester are not expensive (amazon) or at an auto parts store 25.00 or so. Pretty hard to rule that out with out a tester.

I had an issue with a snowmobile, when I did a pull test I had spark, but as soon as engine would fire I would lose spark, Turned out to be a wire shorting out a sensor. The only wires other than the cdi are the safety blade brake, the ignition is normally closed, when you complete the circuit it shuts off engine. I would inspect the wires on the blade safety switch. You could unhook a wire but not sure how easy that is. One technique that I have used is to remove the recoil and spark plug so you can turn the flywheel by hand easily. You should get a pretty good pop when the spark is generated. If you are not even getting a pop with spark logically it has to be no compression or the spark is firing at the bottom of the stroke or out of phase (pretty unlikely unless you hit a water valve shut off and bent the crank).

Did you just say what we were all thinking?

hi this is getting really frustrating...i am getting good spark but it just wont even try to start at all

nothing

when i put my finger on the spark plug hole and pull it doesnt push my finger off at all....

can someone tell me what the enclosure by the blade is?..it has 4 bolts and is a metal enclosure

the screws were loose so i tightened them...still no start

i took the cover off of the enclosure and there is some u shaped tube in it..have no idea what it is...and the cover looked like it may have had a gasket seal at one time but the seal was gone so the metal cover was just metal to metal when screwing down

can someone help me with this?

why wont the engine start with spark and fuel in plug hole?

thanks

can i get a compression tester at harbor freight? will it screw into the plug hole?

#21

S

shelby5041

i ordered an ignition coil takes few weeks

i dont think thats the issue but its only 9.00 so

i will buy a compression tested tomorrow...and go from there

still wondering what the metal box is on the bottom of mower near blade?...does it have any play at all in starting process or nothing at all?

thanks

#22

S

shelby5041

the part by blade is called pipe transfer....i guess its exhaust related so it gas nothing to do with my issue....ill just resecure it without a gasket seal as it was.

Update....bought a compression tester from h freight.....thanks to everyone who mentioned compression...

According to tester the compression on the lawn boy is 0 psi

I tested the tester on another mower to makecsure tester wasnt defective.....i did get a reading of 30psi on a 35 yr old toro mower that does run...but takes lot of pulls....30 seemscway low....but it does prove gauge is funtioning at least

So....what would cause 0 psi compression?....where should i start or is engine scrap?

Also....can a 4 cycle engine run with 30 psi compression?....i thought reading should be 90-100psi?

I figured it was scrap

I took head off and piston appears to Have some nicks/dings on it...that may or may not be the issue but it doesnt matter anyways since its scrap

Thanks

You can get a short block for a 100.00 or so off ebay and just bolt on parts on from your existing dura force/mower. It is not too bad of a job or find a mower on craiglist for 50.00.

Not worth it to me.......just wanted to get running for little to nothing..otherwise ill scrap it

Thanks

I had one like that . I opened it up. Freed the rings up put it back together . It still runs .

well i still dont know whats causing no compression in engine

what does the cylinder look like? I would bet the rings are stuck .
