I have a bigdog alpha (aka hustler raptor). It had some work done on the smart choke. I feel that the engine is running at a lower rpm than it use too. I bought a digital tach you wrap around the spark plug wire. At wot with no load Rpm is 3150. What is the rpm range this engine should operate and how can I adjust if need be?

If you could get me the specification number off the same tag as the model number I can look up the factory setting for that engine.

Idle speed 1600 full throttle is 3200 with the governor spring hooked into hole #3

Why is is that low? Is it due to the hydros or blade tip speed?

That's in the average range of most engines.

It is the peak torque revs for that engine configuration.

Hp continues to go up because of the inertia effect of all the rotating weight.
Torque drops off quite rapidly after the peak which is generally closer to 3000 than 3500.
Torque is what cuts your grass.
Hp is what allows you to go fast.
