engine stopped with tapping sound. Removed cover at valve rocker arms to discover one of the lifter rads was loose. I was able to remove easily, so whatever it was connected to inside of the engine must have failed. Is this engine "toast"?

It may or may not be toast. The tapping sound you heard could have been the push rod coming loose. If you post your engine model numbers, I will try to find you a service manual, so you can reset the valves and see what happens.

Thanks for your help. The push rod is completely disconnected and laying on my bench. Not sure how it attaches internally. Engine info: cod: FC150VJ800 E/NO: FC150VL23487

Here is a service manual for your engine. This should help you understand what is going on in your unit.

If its liquid cooled it seems I remember someone saying they had a few issues with the cams in the liquid cooled Kawis?? I might be thinking of a different mower though.
