Is it time to seed the lawn (in early March)?

I live in NJ. I normally seed my lawn in falls but last year, I decided to kill an area (about 1000 sqft) of the lawn that was taken over by mostly clover and nutgrass. It was too late in the season so I didn't seed. Now it's still not warm enough for germination but is there any disadvantage if I just spread the seeds and some fertilizer, and let the nature do the rest? Would I waste more seeds this way? I like to have the grass grown before May when I will put down Halts.

Yes, it is most definitely time to start seeding. Spring is the time of year to start seeding and weeding. Since this is the time for optimum growth, your grass will be competing with weeds. This is why you would want to put down grass seed to increase its density, and perform weed control. I'd take it easy on fertilizer for now, though. Pre-emergent in the spring, core aeration and seeding in the fall.
Failure to adhere to these simple guidelines is at your own risk.
Won't take but one time the pre-em is down and here comes the homeowner all smiles with the seed...
Seen it more than once in my years.

So...
Pre-em in the spring, seed in the fall.
Simple.
