How does the reserve fuel value on a 318 work

We've got a John Deere 318 tractor. Its got 3 positions on the fuel value. The one we run on all the time is with the handle pointed backwards, picture of fuel pump.. Then on the top position it shows a fuel pump with a red line thru it. I'm assuming this is the off position. Then to the front of the tractor is a position with a fuel pump and the work reserve written under it, I believe this is the reserve fuel position. Can some one tell me the inter workings of this fuel tank system. What happens when the value is in the backward position (run position), and then what happens when you turn the value to the forward position (reserve position)? Thanks

When ever I have worked on reserve fuel systems, bikes mostly, they have two pick up tubes inside the fuel tank one is higher then the other, from the bottom of the tank.

This is basically the same concept but the tubes are not sticking straight up like some.

What I would do is very simple I would just reconstruct the fuel valve.
