Honda Auto Choke? or something else?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this, so hopefully this will help.

I just bought a honda HRX2173HYA from someone last night. It runs well, but seems to have some issues with the auto-choke. He's an auto mechanic, and messed with it multiple times, and eventually got fed up with it, so sold it for cheap. I figured it was worth a shot.

Here's what I know:

-He said it started having choke/idle issues 2 months after buying it.
-It doesn't idle well.
-It runs well if you can get the blade going, but once you bring it back down to idle, after about 30 seconds it revs up, almost dies, revs up, almost dies, over and over.
-When first starting it will often shut off before you can get the blade running.
-When he was messing with the choke on startup, it ran hot very quickly, but when he let go (leaving the choke to it's own function) it went back to it's problems.

Anyway, he said the lawn mower is awesome when loaded down. I'd love to do a quick diagnostic/fix on the auto choke, or perhaps find a way to bypass it with a manual choke.

Serial No: MAGA - 2053233

Have there been any recalls on these that perhaps I should be aware of?

Thanks!

Your mower was built well before another batch of HRX models that did have issues with auto-choke. The auto-choke on your mower is probably OK, but check out this tread for a LOT of details
