Hello everyone. New member here with a question about my Stihl HL92 long reach hedge trimmer.

It has been in almost constant use for five years but today it started to jam and stop cutting on hornbeam branches that it had previously cut like a hot knife through butter.

Can I just replace the head?

I’m not sure if it is the drive or head, how do I tell?

Or is it time for a new one?

Thanks for looking.

Sounds like a bearing failure. One of my customers was only greasing one part the HL-KM135 trimmer head which is very similar to yours and the input bearings failed due to lack of grease. Bearings are replaceable.

Input bearings are 609-2Z and second set of bearing includes the driven pinion. Either you will need a propane torch as the gear box must be heat to 100C to remove and install the bearings.

replacement head is very expensive. Parts must be obtained from your local Stihl dealer.

Thanks. How easy is it to replace the bearings?
