I needed this for work so really no information I forgot a lot of thing since I was a kid like what way up on a head gasket metal as I remember was smooth to head and number up I also did not take the rockers apart I just un bolted carefully and pulled the head off and cleaned old gasket off and took scotch guard red and went over it lightly and whipped and put back together making sure that the push rods were seated correctly a little play on the rockers you can spin the motor and when rocker is on highest point make sure it wiggles slightly

If you removed the head, you need to reset the rocker arm valve clearance. With out doing this you are asking for trouble in your immediate future. Just making sure they wiggle means nothing.

Without knowing which model of twin you have, we are at a loss to help, but here's a few manuals that MIGHT pertain to YOUR particular engine, they might be helpful.....

your engine information should be right on the engine itself see EXAMPLE ...

Briggs vanguard 18 hp model 350447 it is fixed and this is how I fixed it I own Harleys ,triumphs , I like taking things I never fixed and repair them thank you for the manuals it took me 20 minutes never doing a Briggs head gasket and no manuals converting inch pounds to ft pounds some time people are looking for just a little info like what way is up on a head gasket still no answer

There normally is no up and down on small engine head gaskets, bolt pattern will dictate how the gasket goes on. I would never replace the gasket without adjusting the clearances, but that is your choice. You are a far better mechanic than me if you can remove the head, clean it, install and have it running properly in 20 minutes. Good Luck.
