D105. Drive will not engage. Variable speed pulley keeps loosing or breaking screw holding compressed spring tp on top of pulley

My sons d105 keep breaking compressed spring screw on variable speed pulley. owner was 10 years old. Great shape low hrs. John Deere told him it was not worth fixing lap told him mower only has 2 belts. There are three. root cause may have been severely worn belt from transmission to front drive pulley where mower deck pulley connects. Screw on variable speed pulley has broken. Hold down cap for spring had come off right off over screw. broken Screw was impossible to remove. Very poor design. We grown head of shaft than spring and screw attached too. Weld hardened screw with head cut off to spring shaft. Replace pulley , spring , spring cap and belt. Runs great hope it last for my son for another 10 years
