Hello, I have a a 2011 Craftsman YT 3000 21 HP riding mower 917.288528. Over the winter gas leaked out of it and onto the garage floor. I decided to wit until the spring to check into it further. When I try to start it gas is shooting out of the air filter. I also pulled the spark plug to check it and gas poured out. Any ideas of what I could check before i take it into the shop?

Thanks!

Well you probably have a Briggs OHV engine a model number is needed if it's a Briggs it's on top of the valve cover.....

Either its your carb leaking or a blown head gasket, which is very common on these engines..... Take the plug out of the boot and keep that wire well away from the plug hole when you spin it over......

FIRE can and will happen..........

Let us know Mon Ami ......

keep her spinning till the gas is cleared out. Then put the plug back in and start it or try to start it....... Pull your dip stick first and check the oil for the smell of gas...

Let us know

I changed the oil earlier today and its already dark brown, smells of gas. fired up after the gas was out and it ran for about 30 seconds...poured white smoke out.

Blown head gasket most likely..... Do you have a fuel pump on that engine ?? Where is your gas tank at ??

No idea on the pump, but the fuel tank is behind and above the engine

Then you don't have a pump....... It's not needed it's gravity fed... Your fuel line should come from the tank directly to the carb with only a filter in line

Thats the way it looks to me. So gasket then?

Yes sir sorry to say......... Start it again and run it for 5 minutes then stop it and pull the dip stick and if it smokes then yes your gasket is shot.... It adds pressure to the crank case.....

Great! I didn't think that would make the gas shoot out of the air filter. Ill look into the gasket then! thanks for the help!

There are more than a couple reasons for a carb spitting out gas...... That's why I wanted you to watch the video....

I thought I sent you a PM in your message box....

Let Us Know Mon Ami ..............

Sound like a carb flooding problem to me.

OK gents...I did not save the head gasket, it was shredded. However after it was replaced it continued to spray gas out of the previous mentioned areas but the gas no longer mixed with the oil, so thats a win! I bought a carb kit from Amazon and replaced the parts that came in the kit and viola it started right up! Only thing left is the exhaust is smoking after it has warmed up which I am going to attribute to the gas/oil that leaked out when the problem first started. Thanks for the help all in all I'm only out about 20 bucks for the whole repair!

Great for you Mon Ami And thanks for Posting the FIXED reply .......... Be sure to check your oil again for gas intrusion....

You might have to change it again SOON... Don't take a chance on a good running engine.........

Ok same mower, new problem. I didn't want to start a new thread since all the other info on the engine and prior problems are right here. The mower will start and run with lever in the choke position. But as soon as I move it to the run(rabbit) spot it dies. If I start it in the run position it will run for a few seconds then die, It will only run in with the choke on. Assuming this is also related to the carb? with the previous problems sold I just spring for a new one? Any help is appreciated.

I have tried spraying it with carb cleaner with no luck. I have another rebuild kit or I'm going to just bite the bullet and replace the carb, I'm sick of the ongoing issues! Thanks
