Briggs and stratton back firing

Hi fellows, I'm new to B&S forum. I'm a Lawn Boy guy. But my neighbor has a yardman with a Briggs engine and it recently started to back fire a lot. Do you guys know what would make a small engine start backfiring a lot? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Does it have a solenoid shut off valve mounted in the bottom of the fuel bowel with two wires going to it? I don't know if they put these on smaller engines or just larger engines that go on riding mowers.

Since these solenoid valves are spring loaded to fail close, I'd imagine more than likely when they go bad, they shut off the flow of fuel and the engine won't start but I guess they could fail open.

I know from experience! If you break the tip off one of these, it will sometimes backfire and shoot a flame out of the exhaust!
