The last time I tried the "Thumb Test" on a neighbor, I got slapped with a restraining order.....

Have you checked your valve clearances?

Ok, I have figured out the cause. The exhaust valve seat has come partially out of the block. The exhaust valve cannot fully close, which I couldn't tell from the angle I had earlier. Now I have the engine off and on the bench, and I can see the valve doesn't seat all the way around. Now what???

So are we all talking about the same mower now????

Yep. Gently tapped the valve seat back in with a socket. Fit very snugly. Peened as well as i could around the edges and put it back together. Ran fine. It'll probably come out again one of these days, but now I'll know what to do.

Nice... If you did it right, it should last a while! Fish is right though... try not to thumb test your neighbors anymore....
