Your suggestion of going door to door is the best way. Clean up, look smart and try to engage your customer in conversation. Even if you know they are not interested in your service, be polite and courteous. People will remember you and even if they do not use your services, they may refer you to someone who will. Remember, "word of mouth" advertising is the best.
I would suggest to have some business cards printed and leave them at every house you call on.
