looking to by a used grasshopper and would like some input whether i should go for 600 series or 700 series. i want a 52" deck and have about 1.5 acres. also would like to know what is considered high hours. i have a chance to buy a 2000 720 with 2015 hrs or a 2004 618 with 598 hrs. the 720 has a grass catcher and i could get it for $3000. the 618 is in better condition but only comes with the metal grass hopper and tube for $3500. both have 52" decks and both have kohler. the 618 has almost new kohler command 19 h and the other is 20 h just rebuilt.

Go with 618, common sense, try to get the man to come down on price. Absolutely, but why not take your time looking at something new or newer for that price, example Toro, with no mechanical issues.

$3500 is all he will do i already got him to come off $4000. im also looking at a 02 720 with 800 hrs. not is as good of condition but mechanically sound. comes with 60" deck and he wants $3300. 618 still the better deal?

Why would you want a homeowner model Toro, when you can gave a commercial duty Grasshopper?

When you say the 618 only comes the metal hopper and tube, are you saying the grass turbine that hooks to the deck is not included? If so, those can be pretty expensive, so that might sway me to the 720. Are you also saying that the 618 has a brand new engine? pretty hard to screw up a Kohler Command in just 598 hours. The rebuilt engine on the 720 would concern me a little, not knowing WHO rebuilt it, what was replaced and why. If you can get the grass collector working cheaply enough (assuming you need it) then the 618 seems like the way to go. That's plenty of mower for 1.5 acres. Mine has been doing 2.5+ acres every week for a decade.

Even more disturbing is why it needed to be rebuilt.
Like all mechanical things, the hours of use is no where near as important as hoe the hours war clocked up & what the maintanance regime was.
I have customers with well over 15,000 hours up on machines which still work almost as good as new and put in 80 hr weeks at this time of year down here.'
Got others with newer stuff on 1000hrs that are beyond economic repair
