This happen straight up, like no prexisting symptoms/anomalies?
Try fixing the stick in anyway you can then post up how the engine performs.
Only a short run at load, like two minutes max.

This mower is 15 yrs old, lots of hours on it.Oil started last year or so.It starts coming out after running 5 mins or so.Enough to make noticeable smoke from the hot muffler, and dripping on ground. Is it time for engine work?....Is there a blocked pcv valve somewhere?

...ummmm, mostly logic built from the info so I can only offer
"pcv valve" may have collapsed, you could get that lucky at those
amount of hours. However you are reporting a heavily pressurised
c'case which would have had a working valve choking the carby feed,
long before this. I'd bet on a broken ring, or two.
Good news is,,, at that age you likely have a reasonable case to rebuild
or simply hone and replace with OS rings.

Run a compression check on both cylinders, sounds like it might have a lot of blow by on piston rings from age, if compression is low and it still runs ok you might wrap something around top of dipstick where it goes into tube to make a tighter fit. That might get you thru season then rebuild or replace this fall

Hopefully some more will add ideas.

Yeup...thought as much.
Your engine was built long before the current PC crap began. As others suggest, try and keep it going - drive it till it dies - a thicker (weight) dino oil may help with blowby.
Just do not let it run low as that may well and truly ruin your case.

Good Luck an' go well.

I know this is an old thread but that's usually a sign of a blown head gasket.
What happens is compression from the cylinder is leaking into the crankcase building up pressure, that's why it blows out the dipstick tube when it's running.

By now we should have an answer, what was the problem?

Does it have a double "reed" type crankcase vent ???

If so, one or both may be just crudded up or broken.
