It may not be the fuel pump. When the engine is off, the float and needle valve in the carburetor is supposed to float. However, there may be a chance that is may not be floating anymore, allowing fuel to be dumped directly into the combustion chamber. This could cause the engine to hydrolock the next time you attempt to start it. Since liquid gasoline cannot be compressed, it will find the point of least resistance and will blow out the head gasket or even destroy the cylinder head. Gasoline could have also leaked into the crankcase and contaminated the oil. Pull out the dipstick and make sure the levels are correct and that you do not smell gasoline in the oil. If there is, change the oil immediately and fill it up to the correct level. Fixing a sinking float bowl is simple. First, unbolt the float bowl. Then, remove a small pin that connects the plastic float to the carburetor housing. Be sure to not lose the pin. The float will have to be replaced with a new one. Line up the new float and needle valve into it's respectable place and reinsert the pin to hold it in place. Lastly, attach the float bowl with the bolt. If this still doesn't fix the problem, try replacing the fuel pump. If this still doesn't solve the problem, the carburetor may have to be rebuilt, and will need a new needle valve seat. There are many online tutorials
