Is there a standard when it comes to deck height? I tend to cut high, leaving the grass as long as possible while still looking mowed, but my sister cuts hers right down to the ground. Which is best?

Leaving it long is better for the grass. It will recover faster and easier to cut.

It does depend on the grass, on all of my lawn care trucks we run toro lawn mowers and the wheels are set to a 2/3 you dont want it so short it looks like a golf course green, and you dont want it so long cause then you will create bugs grubs, spiders etc.
