my son added engine motor oil into the transmission oil tank of my John Deere LX280 mower. how bad can this mess the mower up?

Check your machines operators manual for the recommended transmission oil, it may recommend 5W-30 motor oil.

Look here Specifications

It shows SAE 5W40 at the bottom of the list, so you should be okay. Might consider draining and filling with recommended oil :thumbsup:
