Has anyone replaced a John Deere ZTR horizontal engine with a vertical one? I was offered a new 27 hp. Kohler for free but it is vertical shaft. Any experience or advice?

I have always said with skill, money, and equipment you should be able to make it fit. I sure can't picture anyone doing it. I would say it would be cheaper and less work to rebuild the old engine even if it needed a new block. If you do decide to do it lets see some pictures because it sound like a fun project.

Take the free, new, engine and trade it in towards what you need. Don't spend a week and a half (or more!) changing things around.

I always preferred the horisontal shaft setup over the vertical. I think I would also stick with the horizontal setup. If you go vertical I also would like to see pictures of the process.
